Video Card Dilemma. Help me out.

This is probably gonna be a long post, but I?ll make it as short and as simple as I can?

I'm having a serious video card dilemma. I'm currently in the process of building a new system. I'm by no means rich and it's taking some serious saving to build it. I'm doing it piece by piece, one paycheck at a time. So far I've gotten my case (an Ultra m998), and my mobo (an EVGA 680i NF68-A1). I'll be ordering my PSU this week which will probably be a Silverstone 750W. Then I plan on getting a Q6600, then 4GB of some good DDR2 800, and finally my video card.

Right now I have a P4 3.0GHz installed in my new board (OC'd to 3.6GHz), 2GB of DDR2 533 and a Sapphire X1950 Pro 512MB. Truthfully, this rig does pretty darn good with Far Cry, HL2, Doom 3, and others on my 22" LCD at 1680x1050. However, I know that I wouldn't have a chance with Crysis. Plus even if I did have any sort of decent results with Crysis, I'd still rather play it in all its DX10 glory.

But back to my point. The problem is that I'm having a hard time deciding on what card to get. I'm probably looking at buying my card in late September. At first I had decided on the 8800GTX with plans to get a second one down the road and run SLI. But now, even though I haven?t read anything ?official? and it?s mostly just what people are posting on various forums, I hear that there will be a 9800GTX sometime in November. And from what I can gather, the 9800GTX is supposed to be one helluva card.

After hearing this news, I?m thinking about just going for an 8800GTS 640MB right now. If the release of these new 9800GTX cards is just hype and don?t come out for awhile, I figure I can just get another 8800GTS 640 and run SLI with those. That way, if these new 9800GTX cards DO come out in November, I?ll only be out 375 or so compared to over 500 if I go with the 8800GTX right now. In November if we do see some 9800GTX?s, I can just unload the 8800GTS for 200 bucks give or take and then I?d probably only have to put about 450 more with it to get a 9800GTX if they go for around 650 like I assume they will.

Then there?s a final option that crossed my mind. Depending on how solid this info on the 9800GTX release is, I?ve also considered not getting any DX10 card right now and just keeping my X1950 until the 9800?s come out. If I remember right Crysis is coming out November 17th and if the 9800?s are coming out in November or December I?ll just hold out for a month or so and not play Crysis until I have a 9800 in my machine.

SOOOOOOO, what do you guys think the best option would be for me? Thanks for any advice you can share.

I had the exact same thought. I'm buying an ATI X1950 XT 512, and when the next range of stuff comes out, I'm going to be buying the flagship of the next gen (maybe 9800 GTX? or will it be 8900 I don't know) which promises to be double the performance of the 8800 series, which does NOT have by any means in my opinion even barely satisfactory direct x 10 performance.

It's definitely good enough to acheive decent fps at a decent resolution (1680x1050 for sure), and neither too pricey nor too crappy ;p

Rumour has it nvidia isn't really pushing to bring out there new cards. I think they are also going to release a 8900gtx or ultra, with very high core clock speeds. These too should drive prices down. Seeing as you have a pretty decent videocard allready and don't need the immediate improvement in the games you currently play, go with the last option you mentioned. Hold off buying a new card till the 8900 or 9800's come out. Ati should also be coming out with 2900pro's, which might not be interesting for you, but will have it's effect on prices. This way you'll save yourself a lot of money. If you had a 7600gs or some ati x800xt then I'd say upgrade, but you've got a pretty decent card allready.

OP: I would hang onto that X1950pro until the new cards come out. Its a fine card and Crysis isn't supposed to come out until November anyways. I think you can hold out til then if your happy with current games.

@ Marc: Where did you hear this rumour? And also, will these "refreshes" be 90nm or 65nm? I would think 65 if the clocks will be in orbit. Can you post the source that gave you this info? Thanks bud.
