video card dilemia

Currently i have a radeon 9000 (64mb edition). I've tried to play games like call of duty and nfs underground and they are running painfully slow. Even when most of the eye candy is turned down.

I'm looking to purchase a new video card in the mid 100's range. Don't want to spend too much. Perhaps a radeon 9600 Pro or a nvidia 5700 ultra. I don't know. Maybe you guys can give me a few suggestions.

But before i get to that, should i even purchase a video card now? After all, im planning to build a completely new socket t (775) system probably around july/august. At that time, i would be looking to purchase one of the new pci-express video cards. Do you think i should still upgrade or save my money and accumulate it towards my next system? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I would suggest looking on the FS forum for a used 9700 or 9700pro. It is far from outdated and the prices used are reaching to $150 and maybe lower. I have a 9700pro and play Call of Duty with all graphics options wide open at 1280x1024 without every experiencing a hiccup.

a 9600xt for $165 doesn't make much sense, considering that an evga 5700u sells for $170 shipped. Actually, neither one of those make much sense when you look at this. 5900se

Someone clarify this for me. Nvidia's lower end cards are marked wtih a se and their medium range is just regular and their high end is their xt's correct.
If this is proper logic, it should be 5900XT>5900>5900SE?

No, in the cse of Nvidia the SE=XT, most are called XT though. Only ATI uses SE=supper crappy version.

anything less than a 9800pro is a waste IMO.

$40 more bucks for a whole new level of graphics card, seems worth it to me..

It sounds like you're already committed to buying a PCI Express card come July or August, so why would you throw away 150 bucks on a card you will only be using for 2 months?

Tough it out and overclock. Summer will be here before you know it.

Either tough it out like he suggests, or have someone who will buy a slightly used card for most of your money back.

All depends on how much games bother you now, and how much you can stand to pay for the 2-3 months of games running decently.

Tuff it out. Spending over 150 for a decent video card now is worthless if you are saving for PCI-Express.

Recommend minimum a card with 256bit mem interface; Radeon 9600 +, or GFX 5900 +. The 5900XT looks decent. I think newegg has a Powercolor 9800se that would be a good ~150 card. If your price range is ~150, I would think PCI-express vid card will be out of your reach for some time. If you can afford pci-express, you might as well go for the 9800pro now.

Look, if you plan to upgrade to 775 while it's still hot then it's unreasonable to limit your system with a mediocre videocard.
I believe you've got two options:

1. Buy a 9800 Pro

2. Wait a few months till you're upgrading anyway and by then the prices on fairly high-end cards will have dropped because of r420 and nv40/45. Then you can get 12-pipelined Ati-Monster 🙂

Or a 16-pipeline nVidia speed demon (just saying, we don't know which one will take the cake just yet, bets anyone?)
but I'd say just wait, don't spend that money on anything now, just use it to get the next higher up video card when you buy the 775
