I was browsing newegg and I figured I'd check out their "open box" section (couldn't find refurbs). Anyway, they had an x800 GTO^2, which I know can be flashed to an x850 XT/PE. I currently have a 7600GS, so I'd be exchanging features (SM3/HDR) for raw power. Also, can anyone point me to resources on bios flashing for the x800 GTO^2? Info and success rates would be especially helpful.

x800 GTO^2

pros: already faster, can be flashed to even higher speeds

cons: "open box" does not guarantee quality, RMA a possibility, flashing bios may not be succesfful, no SM3.0

eVGA 7600GS

pros: pretty solid low/midrange card, SM3.0, I don't have to spend more money or sell it, plays OpenGL games very well.

cons: sluggish relative to x800 GTO^2

Or just buy an x850xt with an adequate heatsink and all the pipes for sure for ~$135 after rebate. It will blow your GS out of the water in Source based games for sure :D

I wouldn't say you're giving up HDR as it is generally unplayable on a 7600GS anyway. Go for the X800GTO^2. If it turns out to be a defective card you can always return it within 10 days I think.

NewEgg open-box items are generally very dodgy. If it were a new item, I would say go for it, but Open Box is a definite no-no. Keep your card.

I would just keep the 7600GS and save up until you can afford an X1800XT or 7900GT.

Peace & ciao !!!

he already has a 7600GS. if he spent money on a 7600GT it would pretty much be a big waste of cash.

Although the GT offers up to %50 more performance in some situations, and allows for another full resolution or AA & AF in situations that the GS can't. Its more like comparing a 6600GT and a 680GS. There is a difference.
