Video card conundrum

Oyeve

Lifer
I have 2 7800GT cards in SLI. I recently got an ATI x850XT. I took apart the SLI setup and installed the ATI card in one of the PCI-E slots an left one of the 7800GT cards in the other PCI-E slots. I got the ATI working fine, but, what I would really love is to switch between cards. I have a Dell 2007 with VGA and DVI inputs, my mobo is an ASrock 939sli32-estataII. I cant seem to get both cards running at the same time. What am I doing wrong? Can this even be done? I dont mind using one card on VGA and the other on DVI, or do I have to have them both on VGA (analog)? Has anyone done this? Thanks.

ATI and nVidia's drivers are mutually incompatible, so you'd have to use the default Windows drivers that are useless for anything 3d (which is what I assume you're trying to compare).

True, I installed the X850XT and it works great, but cant get the 7800GT to work. The system sees the card but I cant make anychanges. When the ATI card was first install I could expand the 7800GT and all, but when I made the ATI card the default card the 7800GT didnt behave and now XP says the drivers are from an older version of windows and blah blah blah.

Bummer, I was trying to get the best of both worlds (ATI and Nvidia). Oh well, I'll benchmark both the X850XT and one 7800GT and play all the games I am playing now and decide which one to keep. May end up selling both 7800GT cards and save the $$$ for when DX10 cards come out.

The 7800GT is more or less superior in almost all ways that a X850XT except maybe IQ in SM 2.0 games, why do you want to run the X850XT then?

Cuz I can get a lot more $$$ by selling the 2 7800GT than 1 X850XT. 🙂
