Video Card Compatibility

Hmmmm. After reading all these issues everyone is having with all the video cards out there I am not sure what I am going to do. My previous cards have all been 3dfx. Well except for Rendtion but hey who are they now? I have gotten use to EXTREME compatibility. I mean with my V3 3k I dont have ANY issues of compatibility. I play every single game that I want too. When I see a game I dont have to worry about if or when it might work.

But the limitations of 16mb of ram, no detailed textures, fsaa, etc is becoming apparent. I want to upgrade but if I do so am I in for TONS of compatibility issues? I was looking at Geforce II MX (Maybe a Geforce II GTS with the low prices i have found on here) or more than likely a Radeon 32 DDR.

I have a limited budget so cant go for much of anything above $150. Radeon I have found retail for $140, Geforce II 32 DDR for $150 and the MX for around $110.

I play UT engine games alot. Rune, UT, & Deus Ex. Seems Nivida and Ati have alot of issues with this games. Or Epic has alot of issues with them. I also play Counterstrike alot. Seems Ati has problems with CS. Is their fixes for these problems?

Really leaning towards a Radeon as I prefer good 2d as well. Not to mention its got a sweet feature set for future games. But I want to be able to play games and that price I saw for Geforce II GTS for $150 shipped is sweet.

Thanks for the input,

Daniel

if you arent in win2k, get the radeon. If you are in win2k and dont really care too much about 2d at 1280 and up, then get a gf2 or gf2 mx, unless you are willing to use the special purpose beta ati win2k drivers which are pretty good. If you wanna be cheap get the gf2mx, if you want slower 3d and better looking 2d get a v4 4500 from quino

Ok, So does that mean there are fixes? I am not using Win2k as its too buggy with sound card, mouse, etc. Well maybe its not buggy, maybe its just by design. So Radeon will work good with UT based games under ME? Sorry to repeat question but that is what I am checking on.

OOo...avoid nvidia with your system. Let's see you've got a AMD 600MHZ Classic Athlon, and a AMD 751/756 mobo. That'll just eat up your powersupply, and the GeForce2 will do the same. Also, it's not going to give you as good as compatibility as your V3 3000. What a great card you're upgrading from. If I were in your shoes, I'd get an ATI Radeon or 3DFX V5 5500. The visual qualities from both cars will just astound you. The FSAA with the V5 5500...it's unparalleled. I love it.

/Me kisses my V5 5500.

dfloyd,

Since many of your games are based on UT, you might want to stick with 3dfx as you will probably get better results even with a V4 than with a Radeon 32 or a GF2MX.

A V4 is well within your budget. A V5 5500 PCI might also be.

Eh? The GF2 does not use a lot of power, contrary to public belief. nVidia's new boards are made on a 0.18 micron process (as opposed to the original GF1 using 0.25) and thus use far less power. Power supply issues for nVidia are no longer a problem.

I have to agree that the geforce 2 MX seems to use less power and also seems to run cooler than my old voodoo 3 3000, as both my case temps and cpu temps are lower since I switched to the Creative Annihilator 2 MX. Unreal Tournament is my favorite game, and let me just say, I prefer the GF2MX to my old voodoo 3. Comparable speed, and much nicer graphics. Just my $.02 worth.

Well I love 3dfx's compatibility but have seen some screen shots of the Radeon running 1024 x 768 32 bit color AND the high res textures for UT. Let me say my jaw dropped open. I have heard that the Voodoo cards can do the high res textures on q3 (Dont really care about Q3 much) but not on UT. These are not the only games i play and I would like my card to last 6 months at least and prefer a year. Thats why I was looking at Radeon. Not to mention price is better.
