I wonder if the video card have anything to do with watching highly compressed video such as H.264, divx, avi, mkv, or bluerays ?
I have a pretty new machine with E8400 overclocked to 3.6 with geforce 7600gt, and I notice that the CPU is pegged at almost 50% when watching such movie.
Will upgrading to a 8800GT will help reduce the cpu ?

Thx

Unless if the software is able to take advantage of the GPU video acceleration like PowerDVD, WinDVD, there's no difference. Currently only BluRays, WMV and some Divx is able to take advantage of GPU acceleration, MKV can be accelerated using some custom mode with the Media Player Classic HD cinema edition selecting some options without DirectSub or Haali splitters, but the MKV must use the H.264 codec, otherwise it won't work, and the subtittles will not work either when hardware acceleration is used.

I would upgrade that puppy stat. I get virtually no CPU utilization at all with Blu-Ray and H.264. You don't need a big honkin' $600 beast either.

don't bother.
what is wrong with the CPU being utilized? are you getting stutter? I actually DISABLED video card acceleration because I have less issues using the CPU to render it.
