Video Capturing

Hi, my friend has AtI all in wonder video card and he recently tried recording a show from tv. He used the ATI video recorder that came with it. However, the show was 2.5 gigs for one hour! I don't know too much about this, so i'm just trying to help a friend out. Can someone help me out in figuring out how to convert it or make it smaller somehow, but still maintaining the best quality possible... no more than 700mb. What program would i need to use... How long does it usually take? Thanks. I'm completely new at this, so please be thorough. Thanks.

some random thoughts:

When you capture with your card, you're probably making an AVI file which can be quite huge until you turn it into an mpg file.

The ATI software sux, try and use something like the free virtualdub

First of all your friend should not capture video at the DVD setting. That will solve the problem for the future. Second, the AIW comes with ULead video editing software. It is possible (but a bit confusing) to convert to another format using this software.

Virtual Dub is nice but can be a little confusing for a capture Noob. There are a bunch of good walkthroughs on http://www.divx-digest.com I would check them out. They also have most of the programs hosted on their site for easy download... Good luck.

Ok, thanks for the links and tips. He's gonna try it out sometime this week when he has time. I'll get back to you and let you know how it went. Thanks

A one hour show will be huge. Hopefully your friend has a DVD Writer or a HUGE hard drive. Once I have several shows recorded, I burn them to DVD, then I no longer need the files. There are different quality settings you can adjust (lower quality=smaller file size)- Goto settings, then Personal Video Recorder tab for other options. If you hit the "Map Presets" button, there are more options for quality/file sizes.
