Video capturing programs

I am looking for some somewhat simple to use Video capturing programs to convert some of my Home videos to DVD. I am looking to get decent quality, these are mostly some old sporting events and home videos but i may also try some of my VHS movie collection, most of which is recorded from TV anyway. Any tips or ideas, thanks in advance. Any good referance websites would be helpful as well. I have the optorite duel format burner and also running windows XP thanks again.

OK i got the capturing down pretty good with virtualdub, although if theres a better program I am all ears. I guess what i need is a site that does a decent walk through of the process. From copying the tape to burning it on dvd. All the different types of compression formats, resoloutions and such. I am a newbie with this and can figure most out but i would like to find something to take some of the guesswork out, thanks again.

I'd like to know what the best program is as well, I want to make some copies of my old VHS tapes onto DVD.

A good site to check out is DVD/VCD help at Here they have some nice tutorial, and aslo links to some programs both comercial and freeware
