it depends on how much bitrates you use...
divx requires way to much processing power and it's not my prefered codec.
here's what I do. when I record shows to watch I record them in MPEG1 at 1.14/Mbit bitrate which is 638,000KB or about 623megs for 1 hour of captures. I then burn them to cdrw bring them to work to watch. It takes abour 7:45 per cd to burn.
the reason I use mepg1 is because it uses less cpu and processing power and has excellent quality for computers that don't have hardware accelerated video.
If I want to record video that I want to keep, I record with MPEG2 at about 3/Mbit, I then use Video Factory or Vegas Video to render them to Windows Media Video which is the best for file size/compression and quality.
