I've done a bunch of live capture off my TV tuner card using DivX 5.0.2.

I'm generally been happy with it, but recently starting using DivX 5.1.1 (the latest) because it's the same quality at a 25% reduction in filesize. I also want to look into using the WMV 9 codec because it seems to have fantastic quality at a low filesize, but I can't seem to be able to hack it to work with VirtualDub, my capture program of choice. Lastly, XviD hasn't really impressed me.

What are you guys using?

I use Xvid almost all the time. I will sometimes play with RV9. I have to capture in Mpeg2 though and then convert. 2 of the best tools so far have been autodub and autorv9. Before that I was using GordianKnot to do all my stuff. I stick to resolutions around 352X240 for final encoding.

I stay away from Divx because you either have to buy it or you have to have adware version.

Also I forgot to ad that the latest versions of ATI's MMC will do mpeg4 capture, but i still rather do the conversion method.

I believe ATI MMC will also capture WMV9. I haven't looked lately so I can't say for sure.

I've been using this and haven't had any problems thus far... If you have an ATI card, I'd recommend using ATI's software to capture video ;)
Otherwise, I'd have to go with WMV9 or the latest Divx codec.

I tried Virtualdub capturing in the past, but never got to be able to use it like I wanted to. ATI's MMC is pretty good and stable now days. The video and audio are always in sync.

I don't capture to windows media because I don't have enough horse power and it's not as easy for me to edit. Capturing in Mpeg 2 at 352X240 I have enough disk space for a little over 3 days. (60gb drive) For mpeg2 720X480 high bitrate I only have room for 15 hours which kind of sucks.

Also if you haven't used Xvid in a while try their 1.0 release candidate 2 version. It doesn't work like the older versions did.

EDIT: Xvid is a lot faster on my system. That is also the main reason that I use it. I haven't tried Divx 5.1.1, but I did try 5.1 and it was really slow on my machine.
