Video blanking

scruple

Junior Member
I have just built a new system and am using a hdtv as a monitor (it will mostly be used as a dvr). It is a AMD64 3000 (venice) in an MSI RS480M2-IL mobo with an ide dvdr and a sata hdd. The pc is connected to the htpc monitor through the mobos vga out. On startup I can see on the tv that the machine posts and errors (no fdd as i haven't changed anything in the bios yet). After I press delete I see the bios setup screen for about 3 secs before I get an auto-sync message on the tv and it goes blank, thereafter nothing will come up on the screen. the same happens if instead of going into the bios, i press f1 to continue. i see the follow-on screens for about the same 2-3secs (remember that there is no os setup and i cannot boot to knoppix etc as i cannot see to change the bios boot order). is this a mobo video issue or could it be related to the htpc itself. i am going to get a pci-e video card (as the tv has a hdmi input and i have a dvi-hdmi cable) along with a pci-e riser card (due to an annoying silverstone lc-11 case (it's the gf's apt so i have no say in some things)) and the video card will have dvi out, do you think i will be able to constantly have video with the pci card or is there a larger issue here?

btw. Sorry for the long post.......

Welcome to the forums. What's probably happening is your system is dying when it enters the BIOS, thus its video output dies and your monitor shuts off. I see no other reason for the monitor to just shut off. You should "review" your build a little bit, and make sure all the connections are right and everything is getting power.

I have checked all the connections and they all seem good. The video blanking is not only if i enter the bios, if i press f1 to continue to a regular boot i see all the regular irq and drive info before the screen blanks again. Could this be a video sync/default refresh rate issue that is causing the tv to go blank?

Yeah, that's possible-and likely. Usually the TV/monitor will say refresh rate out of range. At least monitors anyway. Do you have any standard monitors? Right now, how are you connecting the HDTV? DVI? VGA? TV-out? Try them all...
