Video bios question?

I'm just wondering what CGA 40 or CGA 80 is in the video bios setup.

The first color video cards used widely (at least in the PC world) were CGA. CGA40 would give you 40 characters across in a text screen, CGA80 gave you 80 characters.
Then came EGA, then VGA and so on.

CGA 40 or CGA 80 graphics adapters (limited to 40 and 80 lines, respectively) are old school settings for VGA

back when there were monochrome monitors and such
