Video/Audio editing - Upgrade old 775 or new i5-750

Current system is P35 DS3R with 6750 at 3.2 and is great for most stuff except Vegas video editing. It's acceptable as an DAW, but more speed would be better.

The $64 or rather $640 question is, do I add a 9505 quad and 8 gigs of 1066 ram or do I build a new i5-750 box? Budget is a concern or I'd be typing this on an i7-920 from the south of France.

How much better in the 'real world' is an overclocked i5 versus a 9505 overclocked for video editing/rendering? At stock speeds the i5 would seem to stomp it.

Is the EP35 a decent overclocker for the 9505? (The 9505 vs 9550 debate is settled by price)

I'd like to be thrifty, but want the best performance for the spend.

Thanks.

Depends which format of video you'll be editing. IMO, AVCHD needs an i7 with Premiere Pro CS4

I myself am new to video editing but in my experience with trying to edit in PP CS4, my Yorkfield (775lga) quad needed 3.4-3.6Ghz to playback smoothly for editing. Eventually, rig 2 was born to fit those AVCHD requirements. Now I just need to get the hard-drive configuration suited.

I am also a Sony Vegas user. If you are using or plan on using the 64 but version of Vegas then go with the 750. You will see BIG performance improvements.

If on the other hand you plan to stay with the 32 bit version of Vegas then I would suggest not moving to the i7 platform. The performance benefits are worth it in Vegas.

You can go to the Sony Vegas forums and search for the test script thread. There are over 300 replies so it's a messy business. I've been following it for years so I'm giving you the short version of the results in the thread.
