haha well I watched the video now and yeah its impressive. Amazingly pretty standard stuff for Mullen though. Interestingly he pulls a ton of Darkslides (did he come up with that one too?) and one was a darkslide-tailslide... never seen it before. He just slides on the end-tip of the tail upside down... very cool. One cool trick that always amazed me and seems pretty simple was the 1-wheel spin. He'd just get up on that one rear-wheel and spin like a top FOREVER. For some reason I remember this move in the end-crdits to Gleamng the Cube... HAHAHA Remember that travesty of a movie? Hawk driving the Pizza Hut truck... MUAHHAHAH

cue a bunch of "i used to skate way before it was cool, and i was, like, hella good stories"

then "one time i met tony hawk and he was like "rad, dude"

then cue "one time i busted a (insert tony hawk video game trick here), but i dont really skate anymore

also, if you are really serious about watching "real old school" skate videos....then you gotta buy a video man, none of that stuff is on dvd.

I still think the early girl videos were probably the best (hi8, spike jonze and some of the pimpest soul/r&b music evar compared to stupid skate punk music)

But I have to say, even though its an ok game THPS has created generation of people who think they skate.

You had to realize that once you posted that you'd be at the bottom of the thread... right?

Oh wait...

Dear dipsh!t,

You DO REALIZE that they can take old videos and put them on DVD right?
See examples
I wonder how they took old movies like Gone with the Wind and Casablanca and got them on VHS, let alone DVD.... MAGIC!

Nice attempt to threadcrap though

He's just mad because after THPS came out he tried to do it for real and busted his ass. Seriously, just because you don't doesn't mean some people didn't skate here for a long time. People swap stories on here about how their cat is cute right now, but you make fun of people sharing experiences about some good times they had? Get over yourself. For those of you that did/do skate -> you know how hard that it is in real life to pull off some of that sh!t. And for those of you that don't, well, most of the stuff in THPS is WAY out there.

That's sweet ... now if only the skateboard wasn't completely useless... or imagine if hills didn't have an up-side.

And for those of you that don't, well, most of the stuff in THPS is WAY out there.

you mean I can't do a 100 trick combo grind around an entire zoo while pulling off 540 methods between rails?
:Q

toe - thanks man, its totally true too. if you look in my post history you will see that I've killed hella threads (circa 2-3 months ago) with one snide comment. I hope you dont mind me lifting that.

KillyKillall - I dont skate, I havent in 10 years maybe and never claimed i did (i sucked...lol). I am loosley associated with baker skateboards
ooh!!! i cant believe he just said that, e-thug!!!!

Homerboy- first off you are nerdy for using the phrase "sh!t". let's just get that out of the way quickly.

Secondly, of course they are going to put out stuff like Bones Brigade or Daewon vs Rodney. Those were mass-market VHS and had a larger then average marketing budget, so of course now they will be back on DVD. Plus with the success of Dogtown there is a lot of new interest (read:money)

The Videos I refer to are a bit as to comparing apples and oranges, so please stop the name calling because it really hurts my feelings 🙁

Anyways, like i was saying...try to grab some of the stuff that Spike Jonze did on super8, hi8, whatever he had laying around. He is so incredibly talented. even Yeah Right! is great, but the old videos are just are great!

no google. I skated for 10+ years and competed at the amatuer level. Seriously thought about doing it professionally but I needed to do a lot of work to get to that level. ah, the good old days where everyday I was skating for 8+ hours a day.

-edit- oh yeah, it did take serious balls.
Damn... you too? I lived to skate for years. And we're the same age IIRC. Very cool.

Anyway, I met Mullen back in the late 80s (87 IIRC) and even got to session with him for most of a morning. He came to town to demo at a local mall, but hardly anyone showed up because it was a cold winter morning and freestyling wasn't considered as "cool" back then (but I'm a lifelong street skater, so I loved it). Even back then, he was amazing. If a trick is done on flat ground, he probably invented it.

there were a couple of vids of mullen (he never was as popular as the other guys for some reason in the late 80s...just kinda quiet with super skills) where it wasn't a whole bunch of cuts. Just him working on a ramp or street.

sick man, sick.

If I recall he literally dominated freestyle for some time - the same way hawk dominated vert. Back then you had freestlye, vert and street. Nowadays street/freestyle are one and the same.

If a trick is done on flat ground, he probably invented it.

now THAT is a true statement.

I really need to go out and get a board. I honestly can't think of anything that I love as much as I loved skating.

<---goes to break out all the photo albums and reminisce.

Amazing. How does he do a flip with board still attached to feet?

pressing on the tail while deliving an outward and downward/forward force with your leading foot. the very essence of a kickflip. (you flip the board by kicking it...well kinda)

ollie - downward force on tail, forward force on nose = board rises.
kickflip - same thing with some sideways force to flip.

uhhh.... Rodney has been skating for more like 30 years kids...

He used to get asked the question "How long have you been skating?"
so much that he would glance at his watch and tell you to the minute
how long!

Rodney is one of the coolest pros i've ever met, and the first time was
probably 1981 or so... No ego at all, just pure skate focus. Freestyle
may not have been cool back in the day, but when you saw Rodney
skate - it became the raddest shjt you've ever seen.
