wow, you have amazingly nimble fingers. was that sped up a bit, or was it real time speed?

Real time no less. I could actually play the same thing at a bit more faster tempo but then it's no longer musical 😛

Honestly in that clip you're not missing mucho picking action, just mostly very hard hammer-ons that maybe sound like I'm picking all of the notes. I'm only picking a note here n there to accentuate some phrases.

Yeah, I know.. I can tell when you're picking, but still.. your picking hand movements are just as amazing as your fretting, IMO. 😉 How long have you been playing again?

About 7 years but I never really got into faster shred stuff until much later on. You shouldn't pay attention to my fretting fingers though. They're all over the place with my pinky going out of control until it's actually being used. Bad technique really but I can't help it.

I kinda noticed that, but it really doesen't look that bad, especially since you can still play very well. 😉

I haven't played for more than 20 mins in like over a year. 🙁 My chops are way off, so it's frustrating and I end up putting it down.

I need something to make me play again...

very nice. 🙂

it's funny, playing around, i very rarely come across other guitarists in bands who can play as well as i can, but every now and then i see something that reminds me just how much i suck in the grand sceme of things, and this is one of those things. bastard! 😉 basically i just write melodies and play them on guitar, and sometimes they are a little hard to play, but they're never shred. i can play fast, but nowhere near that level of precision. i stopped taking lessons just as i was getting into the shred area.

Crazy as it may sound, the less I play, the better I get. You need some serious breathing time to figure it out mentally, which I think is more important to further developement than burning your fingers out doing theory and repetitive muscle memory training for 5+ hours a day although it does help build fundamentals. But after a certain point it's like a dead end. I don't think I've played any more than 10 mins a day on average during the last 2 years but I think I'm steadily getting better overall.

: )

The band thing is totally different in that you're no longer playing for your musical endeavors or satisfaction but instead to fit in and play for the general audience and your bandmates. It almost never gives you the chance to do what you really want to do or show what you're capable of musically technically.

I too used to play in bands and have done some session work for some big names that I can't mention but quickly realized that I'm unable to entertain people other than myself and have dug myself into a deep black hole that I wish I've never gotten into.

Some people can appreciate it while most won't even understand it. That video above was major slop though : )

edit: I'm listening to your mp3 femme fatale and I'm hearing something good although I'm not crazy about the happier tonality towards the end of that intro lick. You have good touch/phrasing which 90% of guitarists do not have.
