vid card with crazy fan stops bootup

I was away from my computer for a couple weeks and got back Sunday night. I turned it on and used it for a few hours and it seemed to be just fine. I put it in hibernate for the night and when I turned it back on the next morning, there were some very strange beeps (more like ticks) and no signal going to my monitors. I opened up the case and discovered that my relatively new 8600GT (purchased 2-3 months ago) was causing the issue. After hearing the fan go full speed, then back down to normal speed, then back to full speed rapidly, I took out the card. Since then it can boot into windows just fine. For now I'm using my onboard video. I don't have access to spare video cards, so is there another way for me to troubleshoot this issue? Any idea as to what the issue is likely to be?

BTW, the card is from EVGA, the motherboard is from Gigabyte, and the cheap ($30, ~500W+SLI) PSU is from Logisys. Thanks!

If the fan is failing, return the card under the manufacturer's warranty. You should be able to find a link for an RMA on their site.

Good luck.

thanks. I actually couldn't take it anymore, and soon after posting I decided to open it up again and put the card back in. I secured it much better this time, and it booted up perfectly (besides the BSOD, which sucked). Thanks for the post though. From now on I'll remember to reseat a card if it seems to be broken.

Sounds like your video card is not getting enough power. I would try a different power supply.

I wish I could get another one...but for now it'll have to be enough. I'd buy one now, but I'm saving up for an iPod Touch and a new mac. If the mac mini had a dedicated video card, I'd instantly sell this pc and buy a mac mini. I'm so sick of Windows 🙁
