Vid card HSF push pins

BD2003

Lifer
Is there a secret to getting these things in? It was easy enough to get the old ones out, but the old ones broke when I tried to put them in the new fan, and the ones than came with the fan seem even bigger. Not even god himself could push these pins though. Or is there some secret I'm missing? Or does my card just have slots too small?

I had to resort to using thermal tape to stick the fan back on, is that really really bad?

I used some thermal tape to re-stick down gfx card ram heatsinks, and well i hope your stuff is stickier :/

As long as the tape is strong enough, it will be fine. I'd be surprised if it is though, but artic silver adhesive is meant to be very strong. You could also try trimming down the pins with something, sandpaper maybe?

Its definitely on there real solid, I just worry that the tape doesnt transfer heat as well as paste. I was trying to use arctic silver III, but for the life of me I couldnt get those pins through even without the fan on, getting them through there while trying to keep the fan in place would be near impossible.

If you aren't ocing, you are fine. But if you are/planning too, you should definitely use paste. Artic Silver Adhesive will permanently bond the hsf to the chip, but before you do that what is your video card and the new hsf that you purchased?

Its a gainward GF4 4200, and I replaced the stock fan with a vantec iceberq. So they sell arctic silver that actually bonds the HSF to the chip? I was actually kind of hoping of passing this fan along from card to card as the years go by, at least as long as its better than the stock. Is there any way to remove it once its bonded? Also, where can I find small ramsinks for the ram chips on the card?

There is no way (at least that's what it says on their website) to remove the Artic Silver Adhesive once it's on. If you try to pry it apart you'll probably break the card. As for the ramsinks, I would suggest just making your own by recycling old CPU heatsinks, they will be better than most ramsinks out there. Since CPU heatsinks are pretty big, you can probably get 4 ramsinks out of one. Finally, is this your problem?

Well, the guy in the review said the pins were too big because of his ramsinks. The pins are just too big for the holes on my card. 🙁

No dremel here, and if I shaved the pins to fit, it probably wouldnt stick.

pick up new pins at a hardware store. take the other ones along to compare size. Might be kinda a difficult find, though.

I had the same problems last night putting on my blue orb. I thought i was going to put a hole through my thumb pushing so hard. I ended up using the therman pad.... :|

Good hardware stores and especially hobby shops often have nylon and or Delrin screws, nuts, washers, etc.
If you need good non-conductive hardware check 'em out.
