Hey guys,
i need some help with my Visiontek GF3 TI200. It overheats after like 20-40min at stock speeds. I've been running it open case but even that doesn't work anymore. so, does that mean that another fan on the case itself would do nothing? should i put another fan on the card?

specs:
Athlon T-bird 1.2ghz
ECS k7vza

The fan on your video card might not be working. get a small deskfan and blow onto the video card while the side is off see if it crashes still.

well, after swapping cards with a couple systems, I know it's the video card overheating that's the problem. what's worse is that it's independent of system temps and cpu temps (had ~35C temps). so what's the deal with the stupid Vtek GF3 Ti200? it was actually a warranty replacement from another whose fan ran at like 2rpm but still ran fine...:disgust: anyways, i'm thinking about modding this card with more cooling... i didn't see any OCers in the vid card forum talking about cooling... so... how do remove the fan? i've released the clips but that doesn't help... is it glued on or something? as for aftermarket cooling, all i need is some of that arctic paste stuff and a 40mm fan right?

I bet that as long as the fan on it is working, you could just thoroughly remove the thermal pad and use AS3 and that would solve the problem.
When I replaced the fan on my Ti4600 the thermal pad was hard as a rock and not making good contact at all.
After you release the pins from the back and pull them out just gently twist the heatsink while prying up from one corner and it'll come off. The thermal pad is a bit sticky.
I like to put cpu hsf's on my video cards. Here's a thread at overclockers with pics of modded cards.

I was checkin' that thread out last night Pelikan...

There's some crazy stuff in there, but also some good ideas. It's definitely worth a look!

ok, few questions. if the system is freezing, then it's the gpu right? not the ram? sure feels like it. back of the card at the gpu, it's hot enough to burn my fingers if i hold it there for like 3sec. fan seems to be doing at least part of its job though, as it feels fairly hot too. are there any programs that measure gpu temperature? i guess that would depend on whether it's there in the hardware, huh. how does everyone else measure gpu temp? anyways, how would AS3 and 40mm fan fare on the back of the card? i guess it's worth a try... should i try radio shack or what? newegg looks kinda rediculous for this with shipping costs higher than product costs...

If it's an RMA than it might be the whold card all together dude. It might a flaky card.
