Why can't the death penalty be like it is (or at least was) in Россия? After Andrei Chikatilo was sentenced he was executed less than 3 months later.

Yes. Because we can't make a legal distinction between being sure someone is guilty and being really, really, really, really sure someone is guilty.

Based on the number of innocent people on death row who have been exonerated, there is very little doubt in my mind that we have executed an innocent man. That is too high a price to pay for vengeance.

The cost argument is bunk. It costs more to execute a person than to keep him in prison for life because of the cost of appeals. And if you want to take those away, then we will definitely execute innocent men.

I don't know...I can't imagine killing another person in cold blood for something that happened 28 years earlier. I'd like to think I'd have moved on.

I'm normally pretty anti-vigilante justice and feel like the victim would be better served letting it go, but there's absolutely ZERO reason this waste of resources should be allowed to share the same air as the rest of society. There are criminals, and then there are psychopaths - the former should be punished and hopefully reformed, the latter should be removed from the gene pool.

Has he asked for forgiveness? (Not that I would forgive, just you can't forgive someone that doesn't ask for it)

You can forgive whomever you want. Forgiveness is a personal thing, and has nothing to do with the person who harmed you.

I'd think that the murder of your child isn't exactly something you brush off after any amount of time. Not like you see this guy at the grocery store 28 years later and start up small talk - "hey man - weren't you that guy who killed and ate my kid all those years ago? Ya, that kinda sucked. Ohhh... broccoli. Good call. I should buy some of that."

Of course the only problem is if the father has more kids and ends up in jail for the rest of his life. Sure, he got "revenge", but he let down his other kids b/c he can't be with them now b/c he's stuck in jail. It's really a no win for this guy unless he can find someone to do it for him and not trace it back to him.

This happened in 1975, any other kids he has are probably old enough to be ok with him in jail.

If anything they probably want to help him.

I can't begin to imagine the rage and anguish that father has been dealing with, and being one myself I can't bring myself to condemn his position. I'd probably say the same if i were in his shoes.

Images from Law Abiding Citizen were conjured as I read that story. A quick death is too good for that animal.

dude was 16 when he did the crime. the guy had his whole life taken away from him, he's not gonna be doing shit once hes out. and the victim's father agreed to the plea deal? his choice, move on
*Clint voice over*
"Well, he should have armed himself if he's going to decorate his coffee table with the shellacked skull of MY KID."

16+28 = 44 years old. He can live another 40 years easily. Why should he get to enjoy even one moment of sunshine or a laugh at a joke. f him.

If this dude needs an alibi to get away with this I'll testify under oath for him.

I find it pretty stupid to forgive something that hasn't asked for it nor has any hope of asking for it or remorse for their actions.

Doing that is just being a llama.

Oh gee golly, I forgive him, everythings all find and dany now!

You do it once you're ready to move on with your life.
