Viable alternative to HDD?

I'll admit. I've already hated HDD, i don't know why, i just feel like they are way overdue to be replaced by better product. But it doens't seem like happening and it frustrats me.. very..much.

Wouldn't it be cool if computer can be turned on and off 'almost' instantly? Can't they just seperate the operation part and storage part..
Or are we so helplessly dependant on how things work at the moment, how it's been like.. forever.. whatever..

Why can't the PC architectural change be more.. revolutionary than evolutionary.. everyday same boring sh$#..

k.. umm.. so what can i use in a pc.. if i elect not to use a HDD in it? or is there just no way of doing that..
 
there are solid state disk drives: basically a bunch of ram in a box acting like a hard drive.
....very very expensive, like thousands per gig IIRC
