Via KT133 chipset and 266fsp athlon

Does anybody know if an athlon xp or any athlon with a 133ddr(266) bus work with my KT133 (100fsb) motherboard? Its an MSI pro-2a specifically. I have the latest bios which the web site descibes as athlon xp ready. Will it work at full speed??? It does have fsb adustments in 1mhz increments up to 133 i think.....

I appreciate any and all input. thanks
 
Welcome to the Anandtech forums 🙂 I just had a K7T PRO2A die on me a few weeks ago 🙁 Anyways, I'd say there's no chance of it running at 133FSB on that board because it doesn't have the 1/4 divider. I do think you could run it but unless your prepared to unlock an XP, it won't be running at the right mhz. For instance, if you have a 1500+ with a multiplier of 10 then even at 110FSB it'll only be running at 1.1ghz making it a waste IMHO. Buy a K7S5A for 56$+6$ S&H with that XP and you can run it with the SDRAM you already have until your ready to buy DDR since it supports both 😉
 
Thanks so much for your input, but has anybody actually tried this? Has anybody actually used a 266fsb processor with the KT133 chipset or any chipset with a default 100fsb.

I'm debating on what to do with my tax return upgrade my 800mhz to an xp (if it will work) or get an intel system... i really think they both great systems , there is just that little price thing:frown:
 
if you get a thunderbird, then its relatively easy to connect the bridges so that you can change the multiplier. when you do that, then you can run the chip at its full speed, even though you'll be taking a performance hit becasue of the slower bus speed.
 
All XP chips have a multiplier locked (default) at 10, 10.5, 11, 11.5, 12, 12.5 and use a 133 Mhz Front side bus. 1333 (1500+), 1400 (1600+), 1467 (1700+), 1533 (1800+), 1600 (1900+), 1667 (2000+).

Unless you unlock the multiplier of the XP chip it will run at the default multiplier * whatever fsb you run at. (IE: 1000, 1050, 1100, 1150, 1200, 1250 for 100Mhz FSB).

My advice is to purchase a thunderbird 1400 (14 X 100) Mhz processor. Amd produced thunderbird core processors that run at 100fsb (default) with up to *14 multiplier.
 


<< 266fsb cpus will run fine on a 200fsb mobo, but as others have said, it won't run at it's rated speed. >>

To add further, some KT133 chipset mobo might not support the new XP CPU. Check to c if ur mobo support XP w/ the latest bios update.

Ur best bet is a 1.4 Ghz Athlon.

Just in case anyone needs a recap:
There is no difference between the B(200 MHz) and C(266 MHz) chips except the default multiplier. Unlocking the chip will eliminate that difference.
XP chips are not easy to unlock, which is why so many people are going back to the Intel days of FSB overclocking. Consider this carefully.

Sorry Cherub, i'm not exactly an expert, but I believe the the fsb is different on the c class proc (it can operate at 133 or 100 fsb). (i've a couple of both systems) and typically the multiplier is lower but with a higher (133 fsb).

Check it...

(b) 100 * 12 = 1200 mhz

(c) 133 * 9 = 1200mhz

see i think that is a different fsb and multipler to reach the same speed...

Please, correct me if i'm wrong...
 
006: what he was saying is that just like in your example that 1.2ghz (200) is identical to 1.2ghz(266) the only difference is the default multiplier, one is 12x and the other is 9x

meaning if you unlock the chip you can set the multiplier anywhere you want
