I am curious for other than low power consumption, low heat , low cost what are the advantages if any about using one of these . It seems to me a much better choice for a budget desktop would be a Celeron .

You listed them. That's about it. Besides the Celery has it beat. If you want performance then definately go with a Duron or Celeron.

The Tualatin version Celerons pretty much make the Cyrix a non-choice. The Tualatin chips perform better and run cool.

i have a very good use for the c3 800 fully integrated board... just dunno how much power it can handle/needs(power supply wise). that new via board has everything i need accept video capturing of some sort (that's what that extra pci slot is for). basically, i would use it as a divx/mp3 box. the reason it appeals so much is:
1) it doesn't have a hsf combo on it.. making it quieter.
2) very small
3) doesn't require a big power supply
4) pretty cheap ($110 list.. just add ram+vid capture)

my goal would be towards building a very slimline "dvd-like" almost.. maybe not quite as thin.. but we can try :)

Any reviews/comparisons for the c3 800? some divx encoding would be nice too... as currently, i use a duron 750 and it nearly fits all my needs (should have found AIW instead of vivo rage fury... costs and driver issues)

Those things are about equivalent to a p2 450 or so. You can get a celery with a really quiet hsf, one that is hardly noticible at all as far as noise is concerned.

ouch... that hurts bad... for an mp3 player that'd work.. but damn, not for that much money.

the reason i was looking towards this was the very small form factor and everything on board. altho, dunno how the sound woud be... i would only want one card so i could use an angle riser (tryign to keep it slim). but if it performs that slow.. ugh. a duron would be great except the problem w/ finding a small, cheap, workable power supply :(

For those who feel that 600 MHz is the sweet-spot, the question could be rephrased for the P4 2.2GHz:

"I am curious for other than [high] power consumption, [high] heat, [high] cost what are the advantages if any about using one of these . It seems to me a [poor] choice for a budget desktop would be a Celeron."

I don't think they even reach that performance. I once had a Cyrix III running @700MHz that benchmarked similar to a Pentium 166! Of course I returned the piece of crap immediatelly. They are worth nothing... :disgust:

Yeah, but maybe the Cyrix's lower power consumption makes it more attractive for laptop applications where advertised battery life is a very important factor in the marketplace. Also other electronic appliances...
