VIA chipsets + Windows XP = ?

I am running 98 on a small partition because of some issues with XP that are unresolved yet. My system is Asus A7V133, Tbird 1.2/266, 256MB Crucial cas3 SDRAM, Seagate 20gb@7200, EVGA GF2mx pci, Aopen 56x CDROM, Iomega 100mb ATAPI, SB Live value.

For one thing, I've got the "infinite loop" issue. There is a beta patch for this and a suggested registry fix. I certainly don't blame Microsoft for this issue, since obviously only a few dozen potential XP users have GF2 display adaptors with VIA, Intel and various other chipsets that are having this problem :disgust:

The only microsoft solution I've seen so far is basically "disable graphics acceleration" grrrr... okay enough with the rant, I'm sure we'll get past that issue.

I guess what concerns me more is the via 4in1's getting along with XP. I installed the latest version, and what seems to have happened is that my CDROM and Zip drive are now recognized as SCSI devices. Does this have something to do with XP not liking VIA drivers? Am I missing something entirely? Please suggest!

Also, I think I should mention that the zip drive supposedly has "timing issues" with via chipset (686b?). With my 98 installation I am able to correct this by running an iomega/via patch. I have no idea how to fix this in XP if I can't successfully use the 4in1's to begin with. Are the 4in1's working out for you with xp? My system won't be acceptable without my zip drive functioning properly. :(

Thanks for any help or good feedback, or failing that some good M$ jokes....

btw, I still have xp on the other partition, but will likely reinstall after I feel I can get a better result. Thanks for any feedback!

If you have the cd rom and Zip drive on the promise channel, they will show up as SCSI devices..This is normal

Thanks Gonzo

I'm confused about whether the patch for the via/iomega issue will impact the problem with my zip drive, but I'll give it another shot.
