VIA C3 Processor: GOOD or BAD?

Its slow, very very very slow. But it runs very cool. If absolute silence is your aim, then the C3 COULD be something to look at. But an 800Mhz C3 chip gives about the same performance as a 400Mhz Celeron . . .

Not everyone is a gamer, you know. The usefulness of the C3 depends entirely on what you want to do with it. Play Doom 3? Absolutely not. Build a silent network appliance in a tiny platform? Hell yeah.

If you are looking for a small platform, you don't need a whole lot of speed this is actually a great set up.

I have aEPIA M9000 that runs XP great, works one TV as well as a monitor, plays DVD's flawlessly. Like those above said you won't be playing any games on this set up, but for any kind of web appliance , spreed sheets or other non gaming apps , this will see you through just fine.

My m9000 runs my HTPC in my living room, along with a wireless connection it's an awesome little pc 😀

yeah, what he said. Great when applied in the correct manner.

Great processor for computers in cars to run mp3's, dvd's, gps, etc. OR other tasks that don't need a processor that generates near nuclear heat.

Great to see the VIA cpu not shredded into pieces in this thread!
These forums tends to focus too much on ultra high, insanely overclocked components that ordinary people simply don't want to get involved with. This mentality also tends to ditch everyting that is not top-of-the-line performance-wise.
As stated above, the C3 is a good CPU if you don't play games or run very heavy computing tasks. A system based on this CPU is also a very affordable and (possibly and probably) silent one.

Having spent several hours working with one of these a few weeks ago, I would strongly recommend against buying it. WIndows XP kept this thing maxed @ 100% CPU usage at all times. It could not quickly navigate the internet, or use a webcam. It also could not stream music or video, and could not decode music in real time either (stuttered playing mp3s.)

It's ok for its intended usage. It won't win any speed contests, but then again, it was never designed to. I personally wouldn't go below the 1GHz version though.

BTW, the one I was messing w/ was a 1ghz version, w/ an SIs630 mobo and 768mb of ram. And I kid you not, it stayed at 100% CPU usage, just sitting at the windows XP desktop. It took forever to do anything. INstalling and updating Windows XP, printer drivers, webcam drivers, and yahoo messenger took TWELVE HOURS. The CPU is SERIOUSLY lacking in speed. Enough to be crippling, and a piece of crap.

Waste of money.

Frys has a pc normally in their paper, same C3 processor.. 20 gb hard drive, 8mb graphics, and 128 pc133. 200 bux with speakers (dont you knwo those things sound great). Got a wife, daughter... something who chats, does word apps and surfs the inet... they wont know the difference at all so heck.. buy 2 of em 😀.

dell recently had a 2.2 celeron, 128mb 333mhz, 40gb for 200 after 2 rebates 🙂

D

PS: dont want rebates ? no prob, you can get this on ebay for 300 or build something similar for 300 and trust me that extra hundred will be very well spent

I don't know... How does it stack up against, say my ancient (& amazingly still running stable) Celeron 366 @ 550mhz?... my bet is even the 1000mhz is slower, so I'd say if a PC-sized PDA is your idea of a good computer, then go to it, otherwise don't waste your time, unless your just curious & want to try somthing different for its own sake.
Anybody have any benchmarks?... if so I'd be interested in seeing them.

My question to the vendor:
How fast is the processor compared to pentium 3/4 that is rated at 1ghz?

Vendor's response:
It would blow them away! This is a very good and fast CPU!!
We look forward to hearing back from you! 🙂

I asked them for benchmarks, lets see what they got.

Well, let give me tell you my opinion, this processor is really not effective, the 800MHZ aren't real, as someone said it's like a P2 400 maybe less, so really consider buying other thing, you won't use an Athlon XP, well in that case I suggest you a Duron 1000 or 1300, really it's more common, more realiable, and if it true that it hasn't an enormous performance I think everybody will agree with me that it can broke an C3 into many many pieces, I hope it help you, see you man

Yup, the very computer I had to work on for TWELVE hours. Came from Fry's... for $200. What a WASTE of $200. That computer was literally useless. It had to be replaced. It could not effectively run a chat client, instant messaging software, ANYTHING. Plus factor in the $100 cost of Windows XP. It would literally take it 5-10 minutes to start up MS word (I'm guessing, I didn't install office, that would have easily taken another 4-6 hours)
