Ended up reformatting and reinstalling as I had video and file corruption problems with my Ax63pro. Decided to leave out the 4in1's and try it and its working fine. 3DMark2000 scores are the same. What gives? Anyone else done this?

You normally find with the Via drivers installed you get better stability & FPS in gaming, btw what OS are you using?

I'm running W98SE and might install the agp drivers tomorrow. Haven't noticed any problems yet.

I have WinME and literally nothing works without installing the Via's. It Sucks. Isn't there a way to burn a new WinME CD with these drivers in its database so it automatically install them when installing WinME? I reformat my hard drive very often... lol

Put the AGP via driver 4.24 in and started getting page faults, then blue screens and lots of corrupt files in system file checker. I thought it might be another program like napster or icq but have now done 3 reinstalls and have narrowed it down to the Win 98 disk! I have two different W98Se's and coa's etc. I know they must be slightly different but think I might have used the disk with the other's serial number. Also ran full virus scan with updated virus files and the only other thing is the hard drive but that's almost new. Ram is crucial & mosel rev 2.
Could that be the problem? Also running without via right now, det3 drivers and got a file locked in system file checker for "mediaflash?" or something so really getting stumped. Thinking of just putting the old ABit with 533@896 back on taking it off the for sale site. Any ideas?

One thing I noticed is that UT runs fine after a reinstall for a few times then starts getting slower and gets load faults.

blackhawk,It`s best to install the Via drivers first(after a clean install)then DirectX,& your video, sound drivers last, this seems to be the best way of installing them.

Tried it first yesterday, 4.24 agp then det 3 and had freezes and page faults. Reinstalled and left via out completely. Done full antivirus just now, has to be a conflict somewhere but its weird. Ran system file checker and its okay too. Played UT and its okay so far. No via right now and dont know where the conflict is yet. No problems anywhere now, even the locked file window didn't appear.

Anyone know if UT errors can degrade all around system? Does UT have a log file that shows errors and what caused them. Something like a dump file maybe.

Thanks for all your help

Yeah, they do have a log and will show it if load fault but it wasn't even loaded yesterday. Did it this morning and will run another 3dmark2k. Too many variables and I'm pulling my hair out now(just the grey ones!)

Stable right now and will load programs back up slowly. Just have to have it stable before I go away in a week.

The method that I always use for the most stable VIA chipset systems under Win98SE/2000:

After Windows install with no cards in system except the video card:

1. DirectX 7a or DX8 (reboot)
2. VIA AGP Driver in Turbo Mode (no other 4 in 1's) (reboot)
3. Video Card drivers (re-boot)
4. Install DX7a or 8 again (reboot)
4. Install sound card in PCI slot 3
5. Install sound card drivers (reboot)

Go into Device Manager and check the DMA box for all drives that are compatable.

Install other cards one at a time, then drivers and reboot each
time.

I have done many, many VIA chipset systems this way, and have had very, very stable systems compared to messing with the 4-in 1's.

If you are wondering why install DX7 or 8 twice, it was a proven method (along with most of the above) when people were having trouble setting up the Epox 7KXA mobo. A configuration guide was made up with input from many people contributing worldwide. I found that method cured many problems on all VIA chipset systems, including the KT133A that I am using now, compared to using the 4 in 1's. I have given this advice to others, and they have been pleased with the results. I do not have USB problems, or any configuration trouble at all compared to posts that I see with some people using the 4 in 1's. In fact, there was an recent issue that would render Win2000 unbootable if one of the newer VIA Busmaster drivers was installed.

Just my opinion from much experience, all I can say is if you are doing a clean install, try it yourself, and you will see what I mean.

If you're getting blue screens then it's most likely either a flaky motherboard or bad memory. I used to work in a best buy service center, and while Compaqs and HPs aren't the best basis of comparison, I do know that nearly every single time a computer came in with unexplained blue screens, a switch of the board and/or memory fixed it. The rest of the cases required new harddrives.

Even if the board and memory are new, there's always the possibility you have some bad luck and ended up with the one-in-one-million bad part. If you have another system available, try installing win98se using your cd onto that system and see if you have the same errors. If you do then there's something screwy with the cd; if not, then it's definitely hardware. Also, using one cd's coa on the other isn't going to cause blue screens, so don't worry about that. Hope it helps:)

edit: forgot to add in that if you have Norton Systemworks, be sure to run the system check utility. It has a RAM and motherboard test program that seems to work very well. Helped me identify a bad memory slot in my old abit be6-2.

I think I solved it!!

Thanks to Whisper for the norton test idea as I have it on(only utilities,AV & ghost) and the memory failed! Two sticks 128, Micron Crucial & Mosel rev2. Tried each alone, both fine then back together and fine again. Maybe hadn't seated it properly or slot problems.
I hope this is it as these random intermittent faults are the hardest to solve.
The motherboard was fine.

I had a similar problem putting together my Mom in laws and should have remembered.

Thanks again for all the good suggestions. I think this board is a great resource.
