I am building a basic photo/video editing computer for my dad, and I need to make sure it has the capability to digitize our old family videos. I know that I need some sort of capture/encoding card, and I was thinking of the Hauppage PVR-250. It states that it comes with the software needed, but I was wondering if anyone had done it themselves and had any advice or suggestions on which encoder or software I should use.

Thanks

If all you want is to take old videos and turn them into a digital format, the software included with most cards will be fine. If you really want to get into DVD authoring, or need more extensive editing capabilities, you may need to look into some more sophisticated software.

I wouldn't worry much about which card you get if all you are doing is capturing old VHS cassettes (which generally have horrible picture quality to begin with). Even cheap software encoding cards are generally fine in terms of quality; they just use a lot of CPU time while capturing.
