This passionate believer wants you to think so.

I came across this old 2001 posting when I was searching for information about Laserdisc versus VHS:

http://adequacy.org/stories/2001.8.24.112921.289.html

His summary is very funny:

"The truth is that for all practical purposes, VHS is a better all-around home theater format than DVD."

"When your friends with DVD players smile at you condescendingly and tell you that you'll probably buy a DVD player soon, you can smile right back at them and point them at this article. Tell them that they are corporate shills who are living a hateful lie."

:D

[edit]

Changed thread title from "VHS > DVD?" to ""VHS is better than DVD?""

I lived through this... twice. First with the "vinyl is better than CD" weirdos and then with the "(S)VHS is better than DVD" weirdos. But with (S)VHS there was at least one advantage, which is that you could record on tape. But most of us just kept both. (S)VHS for recording TV, and DVD for renting or buying movies.

DVHS was never actually relevant, so it can mostly be left out of the discussion.

BTW, where I used to live there were two video stores. One was a Blockbuster and one was a small independent shop that initially catered to laser. When VHS was king, I would go to both shops, because the Blockbuster had more copies of recent movies, and the small independent shop had more independent films and stuff like that. When DVD arrived, the independent shop went all in, and the Blockbuster just stuck with VHS. The Blockbuster lost a whole bunch of business, and closed a couple years later.

This was back in the early 2000s. I bought my first DVD player in 1998. Cost me US$300 (drove from Canada to get it, because it was hundreds more in Canada) and it came with a free copy of an unreleased DVD version of Dances With Wolves, which I then sold for $50.

I wasn't sure, but I too wondered if this thread was going to be about that.

I'll take my iTunes/DRM'd/digital stuff on my hard drive... Fuq quality if it's so much more inconvenient -- yes, inserting a DVD is laborious. I is lazy.

Some people will always argue the old way was better. I can remember people saying DVD upscaling made Blu Rays a waste, or those who prefered a large book of CDs (remember those?) over an iPod because "you can touch it."

Even now and then an inferior technology does surpass a better technology (off hand I can think of plasma vs LED tvs or how the Atari 2600 outsold everything from that era), but most of the time when a new standard comes out it's for a practical reason.

UNLESS that standard comes from Apple and their reason is some bs "we know what is best for you." I can't WAIT to hear how awesome lightening port headphones are this fall.

I remember being very impressed at the quality of DVD over VHS with little overhead. I also remember NOT being impressed with BR over DVD. Mostly because they are slow as molasses and the PQ while better is not leaps and bounds better like VHS->DVD.

Dont forget Super Beta or Ed beta, I still have a working machine. Use to use the Hi Fi betas to record lots of music on them.

I, seriously, can't wait until someone tells me how great the 3.5mm to lightning to USB-A port headphones are.

Love their compact Earpods with buds/mic built in, and the fact that it shouldn't be PVC. But their TRRS port doesn't always work even with adapters -- problem with the -RS part.

My problem with Lightning only or USB only is the sudden and forced adoption. They can have both ports for a while. Hell, the MacBook could have had more than one USB-C port...even if they were all the same.

They have had both ports since the iPhone 5 in 2012. Just one will be going away now.

My beef with it is that is does nothing to help the form factor of the iPhone if the rumors are to believed. It is so obvious that Apple is trying to get that out of the way this year (when the iPhone is going to be a yawn anyway) so that way their ten year anniversary edition iPhone 8 coming in 2017 can have a modern form factor without people bitching that the port was given up for it.

What they should have done was bundle Lighting port headphones with the iPhones a couple of seasons ago. Apple does, people follow. It would have been less painful that way. By the time the 3.5mm port went away, only cheapskates and old fuddy duddies would have bitched.

First, vinyl records and hifi stereo systems are making a comeback. The audio quality just sound better with a good turntable, amp and speakers. You can convert VHS to DVD easily with an adapter that takes the Audio and Video outputs from the VCR and feeds it into the computer. If you do that, it will take time to read each VHS tape into the machine. I am not certain if you can do it using FF or if the VCR needs to be in normal play mode. And if you do burn to DVD I would suggest using MAM-A archival type DVDS as they will not fail over a long time period.

They can have both ports forever. Phones don't need to be any thinner, and the extra 50¢ isn't an egregious expense on a smart phone. Removing the port is a trivial design decision no one asked for, and a money grab to sell new crap.

That's what I was trying to say, but you get straight to the point. :)

HD DVD > blu Ray

If HD DVD would have had porn and a few more movie studios they would have won.
