VGA Silencer question

Does yours gets really hot if you install it on Radeon 9800? Also, should there be lots of air flowing out of the exhaust port? I think mine migh have the fan wired incorrectly - there's not that much hot air coming out of the exhaust hole, and I can feel some cool air flowing away from the heatsink if I put my hand under the fan. Is that normal?

Ya thats completely normal, I was fooled too by buying this crap. Even on the high setting this thing hardly blows. The fan is designed to push air sideways not downwards which is why you are feeling air on your hand when you put it under the fan. As for the heat, blame it all on the fan!

It's worked just fine for me. From all the tests I've seen it runs the thing cooler, and I can tell you that it definetly runs quieter. Not exactly crap for $20, let alone the 10 I got it for.

yea, that's normal. due to turbulence you will feel air moving away from ANY fan.

the silencer works quite well. it's quieter than my stock fan, cools it much more effectively, lowered the case temp as well, and allowed another 20mhz oc on the gpu and 10mhz on memory.

How hot does it get? Mine feels quite warm, much more so than the CPU heatsink (I have a Zalman 7000 though, so I guess it's supposed to stay cool)

overclocked 412/365 the temp sensor mounted on back of gpu shows 42c under full load, silencer fan on high. idle is 36c.

I just installed mine a 9800 Pro last night. Yes the heatsink gets warm (this is good, this means it's pulling heat away from the GPU). I can barely feel any air coming out of the port but it is certainly exhausting heat. I had to stick my head way down to read which position was the L and H for the fan switch and then I could really notice just how much heat was drifting out of that open slot. I was able to overclock mine to 430 core before seeing some issues with ATI tool. That's about 10Mhz better than with the stock cooler. My case temps are lower now too thanks to it exhausting the heat.

Sup guys,

I have had mine running for about 2 months now. I can say it's an excellent cooler. Yeah the vid card will naturally get pretty hot, my Radeon 9800 Pro runs pretty damn warm. The hot air does get exhausted in the back of the case, but the fan on the bottom is not an exhaust but an intake fan, so you're feeling it sucking in. I leave mine on high and can feel the hot air being pushed when playing graphic intensive games or benchmarking. Just my 10,001 cents.

P.s. I've overclocked mine to 445/376 and got 14,047 3dmark2001se

I run mine on the lower fan speed and have the same experience as you and everyone else. The heatsink gets pretty hot (so do the ramsinks I have on the ram) but not too hot to touch or anything. The airflow out the back isn't that noticeable either, I tried making a little duct from the heatsink to the back plate (there's a quarter inch gap between them) thinking this would help but airflow is the same so I removed it. If I put the fan on high, I can definitely feel a lot more hot air coming out the back though. I wish there was a medium setting, on low this thing is silent but on high its louder then anything else in my system. Of course in the reviews I saw there was no performance dif between the 2 fan settings anyway...

BTW I don't oc mine, I just wanted it to be quieter.

I dont see why people would even use the lowest setting, this thing is completely silent on the highest setting.

My hurricaine case fans keep the silencer perfectly quite. :) I wonder if high setting will cause the fan to fail quicker, logic says it would.

Ya but the fan is most likely going to fail before the card does so why let the VPU live a shorter life by being hotter?
