Today i just installed a vf-700alcu on my x1800xt, the problem is my load temps are 70c+ and i cant even get through 3dmark05 without artifacts or freezing. I've reapplies thermal paste 4 times but everytime i get the same results, my idle temps are 48-50c. Any thoughts?

the vf700 alcu isnt enough cooler for that card. The vf700cu all copper version is barely enough.

Try reseating the HS/F, make sure it's getting good solid contact and you are not using to much or too little thermal paste.

What speed are you running the fan at?, 5v may not be enough for a card like the 1800XT.

You might want to invest in a Zalman VF900-Cu for that card. The X1800/1900 series cards run very hot and spending 40 for a cooler would be a good investment.

EDIT- i have the vf700-cu LED, now i notice the temps max out at 70 but i cant oc at all or else it artifacts like crazy
so is the cu good enough to handle this card?

the vf-700 Should be enough but you better have some good airflow in the case. the antec smartpower series isnt the best psu. Max load temp of 70 is good for that card.

my guess would be power supply. Or that you damaged the core when putting the zalman on.

in that case, it is the cooler. you will need a more powerful cooler then...Accelero X2 or VF900 should do it.

The temps are fine tho, they never go above 70 which is well within range
plus the arctic silver hasnt even finished setting yet

uhh.. even after AS5 cures the best your going to get is 1C-2C. You just got a bad card that wont overclock very well. Live with it, ive gotten plenty of bad overclocked cards/cpu as well.

Overclocking uses more voltage, thus putting more stress on your PS. Maybe try using a different one? I've got an X1800XT and i've overclocked the core 100MHz and the memory 125MHz all with a Zalman VF700. My idle temperatures are about 47-49C and load is around 70-75C. Very stable unless my ambient temperatures go about 30C.

Stock cooling on the X1800XT is actually better than the VF700 although it is a lot louder. I advise that you put the stock cooler back on if you don't want that card to die yet.

how would the vf700 cause the card to die, it only reaches 70-75 thats nowhere near dangerous

The vf-700 is not the problem, your temps are not high enough to cause a problem. I suspect either the card is damaged/defective or your ultra power supply is not strong enough.

If you're artifacting, then it's definitely a problem that might decrease the lifespan of your card.

well it doesnt artifact regular anymore at stock only if oc'd at all so i'm guessing its my psu, my antec sp should be coming (RMA) soon

How is 70C a hot temp for the X1800XT?

My X1800XT at stock speeds runs at around maxes out at 87C... I hope there is nothing wrong with my card if 70C seems like a hot temp..

sorry for hijacking this thread if I am, but IS 87C max hot?!
