We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Good afternoon.

I'm curious about a few of things re: topic title.

1) Is Veteran's Day a statutory holiday in the US?

2) Do Americans also wear poppies at this time of year?

Damn, I think I had another question but it slipped my mind. I'll try to think of it. TIA.

what do you mean by "statutory" ?

poppies? you mean like flowers? i don't relate flower poppies to veterans day, never heard of that

meaning, the holiday is recognized by your gov't, and you get the day off work. there's probably a better or more widely used term for it.

It is a Federal holiday, state and local government, and businesses can chooses to take it or not the same as any other Federal holiday. We do have vets groups like VFW that sell poppy lapel pins.

A legal holiday, like 4th of July. And yes it is.

OP is Canadian. There's a poem (Flanders Field?) that mentions poppies and it's traditional there to wear/display popiies around armistice/veterans day.

No mail. What else?

i do not get veterans day off, so it might be a "legal" holiday, but my company doesn't take it off

we only take off 7 days as company holidays:

new years day
memorial day
4th of july
labor day
thanksgiving
day after thanksgiving
christmas day

that is it

and my kids are in school tomorrow

Yep I'm off tomorrow. USPS follows all Federal holidays so that is why there is no mail delivery. None of the Federal holidays are legal in the sense that there is a law forcing closure. All they really refer to is whether or not the Federal Government is open for business.

yes.

when i lived in NY , Columbus Day is a big holiday, all the schools were out. where i grew up out west (Washington) , Columbus Day was like Veterans day is here, just a non-holiday holiday, most businesses open and school in session

FoBoT, where did you live in WA? I've lived all over the state.

i was born in portland OR and then lived in Vancover and Hazel Dell and Woodland and LaCenter until i was about 10 years old when we moved across the mountains to Toppenish where i graduated from high school in 1984.

after high school i lived in yakima for a short time while attending YVCC for a couple quarters before joining the navy in 1986

later while in the navy i lived in bremerton and silverdale while stationed at the Bangor Submarine base from 1988-1992

I'm working tomorrow and I'm not wearing anything special or out of the ordinary.

Only government employees and bank employees get that day off.

In canada, you wear a poppy to show respect for those whom have fallen defending our country.

As well, it is an obvious holiday and there are ceremonies at government installations as well as at legeon halls across canada. At 11:00 you are supposed to bow yourhead in a moment of silence to show gratitude and respect for the dead.

Nov 11 at 11:00 WW1 ended in case u were wondering. The silence represents the silencing of the guns accross the battlefields that marked the end of the war.

Lest we forget.

God bless those who are and did server for our countries.

My sis has the day off tomorrow. I think the US markets (NYSE, etc.) are closed as well.

I've worn poppy pins b4. It's not just in Canada, but where there's British influence (e.g., as was my English/UK HS)

In Flanders Fields is brilliant. Thanks for posting it Armitage. We can play Call of Duty, Medal of Honor, or any other war game, but we truly have no idea.

(in lieu of poppy emoticon) for any and all veterans and people in the services.

Veterans day is one of the few holidays left in the US that have not been cheapened/ruined by changing the date each year to result in a 3 day weekend. Even so, as some other posters have pointed out, it can pass almost unnoticed in some parts of the US. Some businesses either don't observe it or leave it as an option for a "floating" holiday. In this area (Metro DC) it tends to be observed due to the heavy Federal presence.

Yep - the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.

Flander's Fields and the poppy tradition isn't well known in much of the US for some reason. Probably bigger in Canada because the author was Canadian.

Lest we forget.

God bless those who are and did server for our countries.

I've seen a number of places selling the Buddy Poppies, but most of my life has been on or near military installations. There's always an email that goes out telling people to thank Veterans for their service. That's it, though.
It's usually guys from the VFW selling the poppies.
