VESA vs VGA specs for Dell 2405FPW: what does it mean for 1920X1200 VESA only?

re: the Dell 2405FPW, what does it mean when the 1920X1200 resolution is VESA ONLY? i thought that is either DVI or VGA? I tried researching this but to no avail. Someone must know this! Anyways, here's some background info to see if anyone can clarify this. Many thanks!

What does it mean that 1920X1200 is VESA and NOT VGA? i thought it's either VGA or DVI?

Any clarification on VESA vs VGA would be appreciated. Thanks!

don't worry about it..i think VESA is just some "video standard". all of the resolutions should work with either DVI or VGA providing the monitor has both inputs.

Isn't this VGA vs VESA thing terribly confusing? It's odd that not too many people know about this and yet this is how Dell quotes the 2405FPW's specifications!

VESA stands for the Video Electronics Standards Association. It is an international body that has defined most of the standards and timings for displays. (It also does mounting standards but not connectors AFAIK). There are older "VGA resolutions" and timings that are very common but not "standards". Your more common ones, like 1024 x 768 at 75.0 Hz have been defined as a VESA standard.

In particular, a VGA graphics resolution is actually only 640x480 at 16 colors and 60Hz(or something like that).

Hmm. Is that showing that the 1920x1200 resolution runs at 154MHz over DVI rather than the full-spec 162MHz? Reduced blanking interval most likely.
