Can't understand the big aversion to a flat piece of sheet metal, myself. It solves the mounting problem and provides a ground plane.

The OP is complaining about the cost of those VESA-mount ITX cases, which are like $40.

*shrug*

I've read that grounding happens through the Power supply.

What additional advantages would I have by using a flat piece of metal?

1. ) $40 is not a lot of money for an enclosure meant to house hard drives and other discrete components.

But when the price of the hardware (mobo, cpu, ram) starts getting really low and there are no discrete components to house I think the price should be lower than $40. A lot lower.

2.) I don't see VESA mount on very cheap desktops like the ARM powered MINIX NEO X5. (When x86 hardware starts dropping in price I expect to find the same situation)

If you can make one for "a lot lower" than $40, please do so. I'll take two. :D

For the Raspberry Pi, the acrylic cases start at under $6.

Two examples on Newegg:

.......so I am thinking a larger acrylic case for a MINI-ITX or "NUC + size" shouldn't be that expensive.
