Very worried about a dear friend

A friend of mine has suddenly developed an extreme rash over the past day and a half which has encompased her entire body, spare genitals and face (thankfully). We had to coat them entirely in calimine lotion many times, and she's going to the emergency tomorrow morning.

I've never seen anything like this. It started as small red spots which then began to multiply, now she has entire portions of her limbs that are enflamed and red, it's quite scary.

I hope she is better soon 🙁

Edit - she's also gone to the clinic here on campus, they were not sure what caused it, though we suspect an extreme allergic reaction to _something_, but what, we have no idea.

Update - She's on antibiotics now for hives after going to the clinic.

I'm very sorry to hear that, I wish there was something I could do to help. Please keep us informed as to her status.

She's 20. I also thought shingles possibly, but I believe you get that when you have a weaker immune system. I'm going to look into it now.

Looking at the symptoms, it doesn't seem to be in line with what she is experiencing. This is over many different parts of her body including her ankles and feet, shingles looks to be specific to the torso and back regions / face. I imagine the clinic would have been able to determine it was shingles today, though they were unsure.

:S🙁

Did she change laundry detergent recently? It could be an allergic reaction to that. I reacted very badly to Tide with Bleach Alternative once.

They will probably give her something similar to an Uber Benadryl, it will knock her out for hours each time she has to take it.

She needs an antihistamine, steroid, or an epinephrine injection. There is ABSOLUTELY NO REASON for her to have to suffer with them all night. TAKE HER TO A DOCTOR OR ER NOW! If she gets them in her airway, she could DIE. I know what I'm talking about... I've been dealing with chronic hives like that since 1997, it's miserable.

That happened to me once...started on my thigh and after a few days it got worse and worse. Itchy as hell...went to the dermatologist and he had no clue what caused it...said probably an allergic reaction to something. Gave me some cortizone in pill form and it was gone in two days. It was weird cuz it came and went so fast and no one knows what caused it.

unless the rash came with a fever or other symptoms, or it happened right after eating a certain food or contact with a certain item, its hard to tell what caused it.

i had hives all through senior year which took me a few weeks to attribute to the carpet/couch in the dorm suite. unfortunately for me, i had to live with it the whole year because the school wouldnt do anything about it. I should have gone to the doctor, but i was too cheap. So i toook benadryl twice daily for teh whole year to keep it in check. i went thru so many benadryl, that Im not sleepy when i take it now.

so yeah...first thing is have her take benadryl or some other antihistamine like claritin.

now, there was one episode recently where antihistamines had absolutely no effect for me. that was pretty scary. I was flying in from some 3rd world country on the plane and all of a sudden i had hives break out on my chest. i didnt get any benadryl until i was in the airport stateside 20 hours later. by then it had broke out all over my chest, stomache, arms, but not the face. I covered myself up, afraid that the customs guy would have me quarrantined or something, and walked out of the airport.

I got out and back home. it was a friday night and I couldnt see a doctor until monday. I could have gone to the ER, but i figured it was none life threatening. (and my insurance sucked i was cheap)

I spent the next two days in this constant hives state. my entire body was one giant inflammed hive.
it was bad when the bottom of my foot got affected and i couldnt walk without bending over and scratchnig the bottom of my foot.

it was all over in two days. I still have no idea what it was. but I know hives are caused by either allergies or viral infections, and I hope i didnt get some weird virus that is still latent in my system.

I've known a couple people who've had hives in their airways. NOT fun at all, its downnright scary.

Alright, I just got off the phone with her.

She went to the emergency and they prescribed a heavy antihistamine as well as an antibiotic of some kind, I can't recall the name, is started with a p. She is doing alright, back at home in bed. I will update as to her condition over the next few days, I'm hoping this clears up as quickly as it came.

We are thinking it was caused by the amount of drugs she was taking for a headache and cold over the past week, a lot of Advil and other drugs along those lines, which apparently can endues this.

Thanks to everyone for your kind words and thoughts, she and I both appreciate them immensely.
