I posted this at the xbox forums because it is (hopefully) an xbox problem. Anybody got any clue? Read my last post for an extra twist. What's going on?

EDIT: I guess if you're not logged in you can't read it. Here it is:

I just turned it on now (was using it earlier today) and now I'm getting static on the audio. I know it's not the receiver and it's not the optical cable or anything like that. Basically what it sounds like is when you have an old record and you have static. Now best I can tell the static is at the start or stop of a new sound. When I play some music saved on the xbox hardrive there are no problems and it can play through a track no problem. However when I load up mechassault or wolfenstein I'm getting this intermittent static and it's very annoying!

then:

It's not the speaker. I just ran some music and with digital turned off and the xbox set to only stereo I am able to do whatever I want and cannot reproduce the static. Also mechassault now loads flawlessly as well. So the question is: is it my receiver's decoder or the xbox's encoder. Not sure how to find that one out...going to test a 5.1 movie now though.

then:

Hmm interestingly I just played last of the mohicans dvd and with DTS same spitting problem. Still unsure which was the cause I kept watching and now at the bottom of the screen sometimes when somebody speaks I see subtitles - but bad ones and rarely. IE if somebody is saying "What's your name" the subtitle may say "WHWHWHWHWHW YOYOYOYOYOYOYO NANANANANANANANA" and that's it and only for a split second. I think my november/02 xbox is screwed.

WOW I have to say also: This morning I was watching something I recorded on the VCR and noticed the same artifacts at the bottom, which have a loose basis on words being said. Now of course the VCR is unrelated to the xbox. Also it doesn't even use optical sound. Also since the VCR and xbox both input into the tv (and in the case of the xbox no output from tv into the xbox) god only knows why the tv is making this stuff up and how it ties into my surround issue on the xbox.

*UPDATE* Well for what it's worth I noticed that when it was set to optical source if I turned it up loud I could hear some radio sources coming in. I thought maybe that was doing something I switched to tuner, then went to pure static, then back to xbox and no problem. Then I fiddled a bit more and then the static went to hell and I had no audio whatsoever. I pulled the xbox out of the place it's in and then it worked. Yeah as you can tell it SEEMS that it was just a loose connection somewhere with the optical cable. I'll update this thread again later if it starts screwing me again. In regards to the text on the bottom of the screen I'm just going to try and forget about it. Thanks for help!

Really funked up subtitles! like where they'd normally be (at bottom in the black part) but just totally whacked out.

Is there any way to tell if the receiver's decoder is working? Naturally I care more about that than a $180 xbox. Unfortunately I have nothing else that puts out in 5.1.

Are you sure they're subtitles? Subtitles and closed captioning are two different things. The only way you'd see anything on the screen from a VHS tape would be if the captioning were on. As for the audio, there's really no way I know of to test the decoder without another digital source.

No i had that weird text at the bottom ocurring with vcr also. However i just tried and can no longer reproduce it. The Tv was being really weird though so I turned it off and on and now it's ok. I think let's just ignore the text issue. So I guess I somehow need another digital source...

So anybody want to hazard a guess on what more likely went out: xbox encoder or receiver decoder? I presume the receiver's dts and dolby digital would be done the same way overall since the static is for both.

I would guess it's an Xbox problem, but that's just me. Did you check to make sure all the cables are secure and don't have any kinks or damage to them?

No that's too easy. I'll do that now but I haven't moved them ;)

you were playing the LOTM in the xbox....I was thinking the VCR.. So the only audio problem is with the xbox vcr link?

No the only audio problem is specifically when playing anything in digital surround from the xbox :) Regular stereo (while still going through the optical cable) is fine :)

or md players?

you say the static is completely xbox only?

and it only happens when decoding DD or DTS?
