Very weird problem....

Ok, I think this ranks as the oddest problem I've ever had to deal with, especially because I have no idea which part may be responsible for the error. Basically, I get a very weird message stating "setup cannot copy the file:" concerning several vital files (such as ntdlr) when trying to install Windows XP or 2000. Here's what I've tried:

Booting from Win XP CD using my Lite-On 16x IDE drive, set as the primary channel master device. Setup worked normally until 99% through copying files, at which point the screen states "setup cannot copy the file: ntdlr" and lets me either retry, ignore the file, or exit setup. Retrying doesn't make a difference, and if I ignore i will get several other file errors (various other files that it can't copy), and when the system reboots windows will be unable to load as ntdlr is missing.

Booting from Win2k CD that I have previously successfully used to install Win2k on this system using this DVD drive, I get pretty much the same set of errors, although with some different files (ntdlr is still among the files that cannot be copied)

I have tried switching CD drives, but with my Plextor CD-RW the results are identical.

My system is:
2x Athlon XP 1800+ w/ L5 bridge mod
K7D Master-L, red pcb, bios v 1.3
Adaptec 39160
GeForce DDR
SoundBlaster Audigy
Seagate Cheatah X15 (where I'm trying to install the OS)

The only thing I've changed since installing Win2k is adding the SCSI controller & drive, but the fact that the install can copy many of the files but not all of them leads me to believe it's not an issue of writing the files...
Any ideas would be appreciated!

I'm a little confused.
You say that the only thing you added was the SCSI card and drive.

Are you loading the Adaptec Scsi drivers at the start of the Win2k install?

Were you using SCSI before?

I don't think the Scsi is as much of the problem as the SB card.
I would install the OS without the SB card in it.

yeah same here I am not sure I understand. head over to bootdisk.com and dl the win2k boot disks, then install 2k from the floppies. or boot from a 98 disk and fdisk and format your hd completely, hell a low level format might not be a bad idea.
