My friend is on probation for selling fireworks in a banned area and has to take drugs tests(not sure why). Well he has been taking them since July and has had no problem. Well today his PO called and said he needed to talk. Seems like his last two tests have come up positive for drug use. I know for a fact that my friend doesn't do that crap and he is pissed off as is his parents. He told the PO he wants independent verification ASAP and the PO said sure. I thought drug test were fairly accurate. How could two in a row show drug use? Is there a possibility samples could have been contaminated or switched twice?

It just doesn't make any sense. I am around my friend almost everyday and have been around him almost everyday over the past month. He was shocked when his PO told him that he failed. Tests are done weekly and your test day varies from week to week. Some days your date could be a monday, and other days a friday.

I don't see how a sample could be switched twice when the days are random. That only leaves contamination, but I thought the labs had pretty good procedures in place. Neither me nor my friend understand how this could happen. Any thoughts?

*update*

Cipro was causing a false positive on his drug test.

It's good that his PO is pretty cool about it
it would suck if he flipped and sent him back to prison

Some OTC medications can cause false positives I believe. I thought I heard that Aleve caused one, but I could be wrong. For my current job, they asked me if I had taken any particular medications (they had a few listed) within the last couple of days. I don't remember what they listed offhand.

I've heard that poppy seeds can cause false positives for heroin, but that seems more like an urban legend/running gag.

Did the Parole officer tell him what drugs he tested positive for?

Not around anyone who does drugs ever. He is as clean as they come.

No possibility of him doing drugs. He tested positive for marijuana.

no, I'm almost positive that if one eats enough poppy seeds that it will bring up a positive for opiate use

They aren't perfect, my dad tested positive for meth once after an on-duty accident at his job.

He requested independant verification, they sent the sample to an out of state lab that was much more precise.

Turned out to be the Sudafed he was taking for allergies.

I AM positive that can happen. One of the VPs in accounting that I worked with had applied for a job at another bank, and his test came back postive. He loved poppy seed muffins. They told him to stop eating them and redo the test, which he did, and they finally hired him.

And if you knew the guy, he would be the LAST person to ever do drugs. :)

It's definitely a good idea for him to get tested by a different, independent lab. Shoddy work can and does happen.

It's true, happened at AMD, they were selling muffins with poppy seeds and people started failing left and right, they 'fixed' the issue.

I am willing to bet that he has smoked/eaten pot or been around it. Quite simply, get another test done. If that one is positive, then there is just no doubt that he was around it or doing it! :(

Probably from walking through all off those damn (pot)smokers in building entrances. :Q

What chemical(s) did he test positive for?

I HATE STUPID DRUG TESTS.

They're a violation of our rights. What we do at home is our damn business. Don't search me when I'm clearly innocent, don't question me until I'm a suspect, and allow me to feel secure in my person.

Exactly. Althought I don't care for drug tests, my friend broke the law and he has to take drug tests now. He shoud, however, be able to take tests and the results be accurate.

It's not an urban legend. Opium comes from poppy leaves. Heroine has nothing to do with poppy seeds.

The OTC thing could be true. If he's taking any cold or allergy medication, they have steroids in them. Tell your freind to ask his PO what they came up positive for. You should be able to narrow down what the problem is.

Possible contamination from the lab is not a very reallistic reason. They are very careful and very accurate, after all, they have very extensive training, and they enjoy what they do, so they will take pride in it.

If he tested positive for pot then chances are he has been around somebody while they were smoking it, because THC is not in anything else that he could take. As far as OTC meds are concerned.

Maybe, assuming it was only illegal fireworks the friend was dealing.

But why trust a criminal's word after failing two drug tests for THC? All of the false positives brought up here and in the thread of a guy applying for enlistment (awhile back) were opiates, amphetamines and cocaine not THC. Chances are he is smoking sometimes and thought he could beat the test or bluff.

Just watch the losers on police reality shows trying stupid lies when they're caught red-handed.

Heroin can come from poppys. As well as opium. For hospital use, I believe its man made now.

I've heard second hand smoke can cause a false positive. He go to parties much? If so they must be setting the threshold for the test awfully low.

Not trying to be accusatory, but how can you know exactly what he has and has not been doing? Unless you are watching him 24/7 you cannot know beyond all certainty. I don't think a little marijuana is that bad thing. Maybe he just doesn't want you to know. Even the closest of friends have things they don't divulge to each other.

What is the procedure for civilian drug tests? I have to take them for my job (randomly) and I tell ya, you lose all modesty when taking the test. The "inspector" needs to see the urine leave the "unit" Can be a tad unnerving.

well if he isnt taking drugs, he should take precautions to avoid false positives

Eat a nice dinner the night before. On the day of the drug test, make sure you take a nice sh!t and a nice piss. Do not submit your first piss of the day!

Also, be sure that the sample remains sealed until it reaches the lab.

Here in Vegas almost every employer requests drug tests. There are independent testers all over the place. If he/she is really concerned, you can have a "hair" test done that goes back as long as the hair is. About 1/4" per month.
