Very strange problem

I've had an older Netgear FA312 network card for quite a while and it's worked flawlessly until now. However, now I get a problem when playing certain games on my PC where the entire system freezes and unfreezes in 5 second intervals. After about a minute of this everything goes back to normal, except my computer no longer has an internet connection due to the router being totally scrambled. I need to power cycle the router to reacquire the IP address, and it's the entire router as well because my roommate loses his connection too.

Abit KX7-333 mobo
Netgear FA312 NIC
Linksys BEFSR41 (wired) 4-port router

I mentioned this happens in certain games. Specifically it has been recently occuring randomly when I turn a WoW quest in, but it's unrelated to the game because I've had this occurr before in BF1942, etc. The last time this happened I was on a dorm network and just needed to restart my machine to fix it.

My gut instinct is the NIC, but who knows. Any advice would be great.
 
eh? thsi might sound basic, but make sure the router is updated to the most recent firmware, disable port forewarding, make sure the router is in a nice, check settings, cool location, etc. Other than that... i'm not quite sure... =\
 
My router tends to do the same when I am using p2p and allowing too many connections....router kind of overloads and needs to be reset!!

Try to find out what others on the network may be doing when you are experiencing your problems....
 
Well I just updated the router's firmware and ran into the same problem. I did find that this usually happens when my roommate is playing WoW too.

edit: well there goes that theory. It just happened again when my roommate wasn't home. The strangest part is this only happens to me, it doesn't ever happen to him.
 
Some of the netgear routers by design, do this. NAT table gets flooded, crash bang whallop.
Try DMZ mode? If you do, MAKE SURE you have a half decent firewall active.
