OK I *thought* I had a hardware modem, it is ISA and internal, but it is an irregular shape (rectangle minus a square), and it says DSP on it. It's a 3COM/USR modem, 56K..
So here's the problem... Win98 and Win2K both don't think that I have a dial tone when I try to dial up. I just tried BeOS this morning and it worked, surprisingly. So now I'm wondering which is at fault, the operating systems, or the actual modem hardware.
Since this in my opinion is a "winmodem", and also works in BeOS, I'm automatically surprised at it ...
So anyway, it thinks there's no dial tone. I check everything.. the resource settings, etc... Checked and made sure that nothing was changed, at all. It has been working for a couple years, and I haven't changed the configuration at all. It is on COM3, with COM1 and COM2 already "there"... It's one of those modems that sort of create their own COM port and sit on it that way ... Otherwise it doesn't show up anywhere.
I tried moving the modem to different ISA slots in the computer, etc, to no effect. One of the times when I turned on the computer, I picked up the phone and I heard the modem dialing out right away! My computer hadn't even reached the BIOS screen yet, and my modem was dialing the ISP!! Of course it would tell me I had no dialtone then, if it had already dialed and connected! I couldn't browse or use any internet things though, so the "connection" was useless anyway.
If this helps any, here are the markings from the modem:
SN: 23DTB6M9SMWF
Product: 3CP325687C
And there's a chip on it that says "DSP", as well as "D11647PGF" and "HG-94A4DRW".
I don't know what most of these mean, but this modem is damn well pissing me off! It's the second 3COM modem that's crapped out on me! Well, sorta, because right now it's working under BeOS... Which I don't understand.. If it works under BeOS, then it can't be a hardware problem? But if it's not a hardware disorder, then how come it was dialing out on its own, etc? It just doesn't make sense to me.
Well I am content using BeOS, I think it's a cool OS and all, but I do not like the fact that if I go into Win98 or Win2K my modem won't work! I want it to work, damnit! And 3COM owes me a freakin hardware modem!! The modem I originally paid for was a 56K internal faxmodem, ISA and completely rectangular, and completely HARDWARE. I connected at 49333 and got 85-100ms (ISP) ping, good downloads, etc.
Somehow, it got busted. Storm I believe (isn't the case this time though). I returned it to the store, and I got the same thing back, as far as I knew. The box was exactly the same, it didn't say anywhere about DSP, Winmodem, nothing. It was still ISA though, but it was a DSP modem! Now at the time of purchase, I knew nothing about this, and I was just like hmmm, was my modem like this before? I didn't even care, so I just plugged it in and went along until now... And all the while, I've been getting 44000 and 48000 connections instead of 49333, and slightly higher pings, lower download speeds (although still nothing to complain about).
So obviously my phone lines are mediocre, and having a 'winmodem' does not help me any, just slightly degrade my performance (also disconnects every now and then - my hardware modem never did.)
Anyway, it's been a long time since I've had this (the DSP) modem, and I can't locate a recept or anything, the box either. So how can I do anything about this? My modem seems to be crippled (I'll test it in Win98/2K later again to make sure), and I don't want to have to pay another $145 (yes, it was $145 - CAN) for a new modem which may break again. If this doesn't work and can't be replaced by a new HARDWARE modem, then I don't think I'll ever be purchasing another 3COM product again.
Anyways, any help would be greatly appreciated, I really would like to get this problem resolved as soon as possible, as I don't want to be stuck with a crippled modem forever... And if it doesn't work at all, I'll have to live with a 33.6 again :| ack
the horror...
Please help
