Very strange little problem

I hear a faint little static noise from my headphones and speakers. I can't seem to hear it when I'm on the desktop but as soon as I open something (Firefox, a game, etc.) the faint little static noise comes back. Going up and down with the scrolling bar in Firefox seems to make the static noise a little bit louder. Right clicking to open the menu on the desktop seems to make it louder too. The sound is fairly hear able when playing a game. I really have no clue what could be causing this.

This started happening after I installed a Gigabyte 7600 GT to replace an Asus 6600 GT.

Thanks.

It seems like electromagnetic interference. Does it get louder when there is load on the CPU and get quieter when the CPU is idle? I think that your sound card does not do a good job of filtering out EMI.

That makes a lot of sense. The sound seems fine when the computer is idle but as soon as I start doing stuff, it gets louder. Must explain why it's a lot louder when playing games. I'm using the onboard sound from the A8N-SLI.

Is my only option buying a sound card?

Thanks.

Most likely because your new 7600GT draws more power & thus creates more interference.

Would buying a sound card take care of the problem? The 7600 GT will still draw power, will it still create interference?

Thanks.

The interference could also come from your power supply been maxed out by the new video card. What type of power supply do you have and how many watts?

I'm using this power supply: Antec 480W TruePower

Is there some software that will give me my power usage?

Unless you removed it for the picture it does not seem to be connected. If not you are pulling way too much current across the motherboard bus lines and that is the source of your problem. I see a molex connector with nothing plugged in it right by the video card next to the red LED behind the outside sound connectors.

A little silly that I signed up for the forums just to answer this. I had the same problem and figured it out, so I'm doing my part to pass on the knowledge.

In Volume Control, go to Options > Properties. Put a check next to PC Speaker. Hit OK, and then it will appear in the window. Check mute. Problem should be solved, and its a big relief when it is.
