VERY slow program installs ... Anything I can do?

I have one reasonably decked out computer (2x600Mhz,
512Mb, tons of hard drive space, etc.) running
Windows 2000 that I use as
a software test bed, so as a result I have TONS of
programs installed on it.

The problem is, it now takes FOREVER to install new
programs on the machine. For example, InstallShield
comes up, and then hangs for quite a while at 99-100%.
Then that disappears and it can be a couple of minutes
before the actual install dialogue appears. Once I get
the install dialogue, installation usually occurs
at the standard (fast) speed.

Could this just be due to "too many" entries in the
registry?

Is there anything (obvious) I might do to speed things up?
I have tried registry cleaners/speeders in the past, and
my experiences have generally been poor...Lots of times
things don't seem to work very well afterwards. Any
suggestions for such a thing that works (properly) under
Win2000?

I just posted a simular expierience unders OSes here. I have the same thing happening to me but in WinME.

Re: How many things in the system tray?

Hmmm...Maybe about ten or so. Motherboard monitor, Norton (turning
off Norton doesn't speed things), a UPS monitor program, cpuIdle,
a software firewall, an Intel NIC program, the standard audio adjust
program, prolly 2-3 more than I'm forgetting now...

I think it is best to generally reinstall win2000 again without the useless installs. Other than that, you might wana turn off CPU IDLE and try again

you aren't running Outlook 2000 by chance, are you?

If so, the solution to your problem is to go to www.officeupdate.com and get the SP-1 upgrade to office. That will fix the problem.

I know I suffered from this too for a long time before I realized that it could be fixed. MS has a kb article about it.

Thanks...

Does anyone have a direct link to a downloadable version of the
SP-1 update for office? I have a slow connection at home, so what
I want to do is download the update at work, burn it to a CD and
install it at home...

(Or for that matter, a link to the Knowledge Base article that
discusses this?)

I can never seem to find these updates on the MS site...only the
"let us install a demon on your machine that will do the rest for
us" types of updates...

Thanks,

Kwad

Hmm... I had the same problem (note: the exact same problem), but I found out it was my virus scan software (Macafee) that was causing the problem.

Edit: Oops I just read more closely. I see you already tried disabling Norton. Sorry.:frown:

OK, I installed service pack SR-1a for Office 2000. I am
still having the same problem (InstallShield takes forever
to go from 99% to actually running).

Any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Kwad
