Very slow network speed

I have a Linksys WRT54G hardware v2.0, firmware v3.03.6. When I transfer files from my desktop to a laptop, even with both wired, it has taken me at least 1 1/2 hours for 5 GB of data. Likewise, streaming a video image on the laptop by playing through a shared virtual drive on the desktop OR by sharing the file and mounting it locally on the laptop results in stuttering video. Website browsing speed and streaming video on websites is fine, however, and on my wired desktop, I can achieve max download speeds of 6 Mbps.

Any ideas for possible causes or suggestions to improve this?

Thanks.

Why don't you share the file via windows file sharing and use daemon tools to mount it on your laptop directly? I have done this before with no issues. If i had to guess it might be that something about sharing a virtual cd rom drive is quirky in windows.

Thanks, but actually that's what I tried doing first, and it was the same. I forgot to mention the slow file transfer speeds in the OP, which actually changes the scope of the whole problem so I edited the OP. Thanks for prompting that.
