Ok, here's the problem... my gf's system is a Dell Optiplex GX100. When we plugged in a V5 for her, the PS went dead... i don't knowif it's because it caused a surge, or just some really funky timing and the PS went out at that time. But we went and got another PS, a 300watt one. Now the thing is, apparently the Dell's mainboard has a VDC power connector, and the PS we got didn't ahve one. Can it work without a VDC being plugged in? And what the hell is thta for? i've never seen that before.

Anyways, we plugged everything in, and it's still not working. So i'm just narrowing out the problem... and trying to figure out if it's because we don't have a VDC connecting to it that's causing this... or something else like a dead mainboard (god i hope not).

Could you describe the VDC connector (no info @ Dell.com). Does it look like a small 2 or 3-pin connector similar to CPU cooling fans that might be used for monitoring the PS' fan rpm?

Sir I'm going to have to ask you to Please take a step back.
If you don't understand what VDC is then take it to a repair shop.

VDC=Voltage Direct Current... ummm like 12 volts DC
VAC= not a vacuum but it stands for Voltage Alternating Current... ummm like what runs in your home and what leads up to your power supply 120 AC volts

err like AC DC
Short version: Your power supply takes the 120v AC current and turns it into 12v DC.
Save everyone some and money and let the pros mess with it.

I beleive for a Dell Board, you need a Dell supply, as they are not the same as your run of the mill atx board as to thier hookups onboard. I doubt that the board blew, unless there was current to the board while you were working on it, or unless you wern't properly grounded.

For those that have the enermax PS's, I'm thinking it could be the so called "AUX" connector...looks like 1 side of a AT mobo hookup.
I'm not positive it needs one, but is more stable with it...

Moral..I see Dell's PS specs as being 110 watts, which isn't enough to power a crystal radio. The V5 prolly cooked the goose. Perhaps there is a rating on the old PS to confirm this.

I think my Sparkle has one of those power connectors. Guess that is what it is for.

The Optiplex dont work without the auxillary plug. Tested it to find out but it wont boot up. The power light comes on but flashes amber and it doesn't shut off until you pull the plug.

I would get a Enermax for a replacement instead of a cheapo 110 watt Dell.
