Very odd sound problem

I've had a problem for months now that's been driving me insane. 90% of the time my computer won't play sounds. Sounds in some games, mp3s, and a few online videos play, as do the sounds from the gigabyte sound test utility. However, I don't get any sound from online flash games or probably 80% of the videos I try to watch. Windows sounds don't play either.

I've reinstalled drivers 3 times, checked and double-checked all of the settings. I have no idea how to fix this.

I'm using the onboard sound of my Gigabyte GA-K8NSNXP board. The rest of the computer is AMD A64 XP2800+, Geforce 4200ti, 2 GB ram, Antec True480 PSU. Does anyone have any ideas?

I've updated flash, but have not checked audio codecs and DirectX. Will do that and report back.

OK, I downloaded the standalone version of DirectX 9.0C, installed it.
Uninstalled flash, rebooted, and then reinstalled.
Downloaded and installed all of the codecs I could find. Still nothing. I'm stumped.

What about possible driver updates for your onboard sound from the gigabyte website?
