Very odd problem with my Linux laptop

I have an Averatec 6100HS laptop running Slackware 10 w/ Kde 3.2.3. My laptop is having a problem keeping the correct time, everything works fine if the laptop is left open, however if I close the the laptop (and leave it running) time completely stops counting. For example, if I close the laptop at 12:00 it will be 12:00 when I open it again no matter how long I wait. This is happening regardless if I use the laptop battery or power adapter for power. Can anyone think of any reason why the time would stop when the laptop is closed? (there is no APM support in my kernel btw).

I suppose I could try enabling APM support. I can't see why it would be needed for something as simple as keeping time however
