No. It's totally unheard of.

Normally, the card will only be taken at the end. And even that is becoming less common - restaurants with more modern equipment have wireless handheld card terminals that are brought to the table for the customer to insert the card and enter their PIN.

However, it's amazing what people will do if they think it is the done thing.
