VERY HOT!!!!!!! Planar 19" LCD from DELL, $748 + tax, shipped

I just upgraded from a Compaq P900 19" CRT (which I got on a $300 hot deal from CDW last winter) to the Planar 1904Z on this week's hot deal from Dell Small Business. I have it on a DVI connection to an ATI 8500DV.

Full-motion video looks a little strange, thanks, I think, to the rise-and-fall effect of the pixels on the LCD. However, the effect is minimal and not at all distracting (once you get used to it...).

Now I see the P900 has fallen to $200. It, too, is a great monitor, as CRTs go. Is there a $5-600 difference between the two?

I think not.

SteveO.....are you saying the price difference between the Compaq CRT and the Planar LCD doesn't warrant the purchase of the LCD?

Buying this screen with the 15 off coupon in
the home store is the equivalent of buyin
the thing for about 699 in a retail store and
that's nearly half of what some people were
paying a few months ago.

I'll second the comment about lcd prices coming down.

Looks like this one's come down about 40 percent.

I got mine yesterday and trust me........if you don't own one
you "do" need it...

the rumor I heard is the price is going up at the end of the year. Because of demand and supply relationship sort of things

Well, Supply and Demand should be for a comparitively similar good or service....a good in this case. I do not know of people scrambling for 19" LCDs out there to incorporate with a system (Dell, Gateway, etc). It would take a corporate need to effect the supply of LCDs on the market. That said...there is slated to be new LCDs coming out with quicker response times in the TEENS(18ms and 13ms, roughly). I forget the exact response time, but I *thought* it was in the 12ms neighborhood were an LCD would be no different than a CRT. If anyone knows for sure...I'd love to learn. I read an article a couple months ago about it and the new LCDs coming out, but the exact tech specs elude me.

Anyways...Once the new and faster LCDs come out, perhaps they would start to bundle the 19" 25ms LCDs with compies, but the price would be greatly pressured by the people who want the quicker rise/fall times of the LCD.

That's my opinion and 2 cents.

Chadder007: That's what I'm saying. Of course, that's just one man's opinion. YMMV.

This is not to say I don't love this monitor (the Planar).

I just think the Compaq P900 is also excellent. And, it supports resolutions well beyond what the Planar can do, and doesn't have that very slight latency thing happening with full motion video.

The anti-aliasing that the Planar to scale up resolutions below 1280x1024 to full screen size, is very good; but it suffers from some JPG-like compression artifacts around edges of things on the screen (in particular, text characters). A CRT doesn't have this effect.

I'm not crapping on this deal...after all, I went for it...always wanted an LCD and the price for these specifications was compelling...but this Planars is not God's answer to all LCD shortcomings.

With all due respect, I think most ppl buy LCD's because:

1. They look cool, and ARE cool (literally)
2. They save a lot of space
3. Better on the eyes
4. They look cool.

If you can afford the 750 bucks and want this, go for it. As for me not *needing* it - it's just that. I think my priorities with 750 bucks can be best utilized elsewhere.

I just received mine. This monitor is better than that FP2000 dell i sent back!!!!. You give up a inch, but save $400 dollars. but Games are great on the planar and it seems to be much clearer. I am finally replacing my 21" sony CRT for good. Already seems cooler in the room.

Not one single dead pixel. Ordered thursday night and i received it today, monday. Used the free overnight. So they processed it friday. Think i'll order another one to go with the radeon 9700pro i just ordered. God knows if it will ship monday like promised.

I have a Planar 17.4" for work and I really like it (for one thing, everyone in the whole agency is constantly envying over it 😀). It's not as slim as many others... about 7" thick from front to back on the display part of it IIRC. What would even top this one is if I had the pivot model! 😀

Dell is taking off 20%, so this LCD is now $703 w/ free shipping & no tax. If you use eb@ates, could be about $690. Its low enough now that I can't wait for prices to drop some more - just bought one.

i only see 15% off, which is still $747. is there a link somewhere for 20%?

instead of going straight to monitors, go to dell-branded accessories, and then to monitors. btw, when you select shipping, check "Next day." for some reason, all the shipping is free so i got it shipped next day for $703 and no sales tax! killer deal!

F**K, I bought it at 747, it drops to 703, what a pity. I wish I could return it, and order it again. But I really hate the hasle

I'm still not getting it to show up for 703 despite going in through the "dell branded peripherals" section...anything I'm missing?

Would someone provide please provide explicit directions to gettign this monitor to show up at 703... Like first going to Dell@Home->click on Upgrade your Dell-> etc... I have tried all of the listed tricks as best I can and can only get $747.

Additionally, is this the one with the 1600x1200 native resolution? Dell has several different PLanar models of this variety listed.

Thanks and best of luck on this sweet deal if this is the 1600 res version.

Someone beat me with a clue stick. Why would you want this 17" 1280x1024 over the 20" 2000FP which does 1600x1200? That one is on sale at 20% off with free shipping.

becuase this is ~$500 cheaper???

Dammit! What a difference a day (or rather, less than a week) makes. I did the $733-after-ebates + tax = $791 deal.

Now $703? Dammit!

Well, maybe another reason is that it is not a 17", but a 19".
