Very Happy with New Build

Alright, basically I came into a little money and built a new rig with it. I had a couple of issues that were resovled with a simple bios update. On a 1,400 budget including OS and monitor this is what I built.

ThermalTake Soprano Case
Intel E6400
2 gig OCZ Platinum Rev 2
ATI 1900XT
320 gig barracuda
Gigabyte DS3 Motherboard
Thermal Take 420w PSU
Acer 19 in Widescreen

This was my first build and I had some minor problems, but the case was great. I barely needed any tools, all of the drives and cards mounted with no tools. I basically put it together and it booted fine. I had some ram and other minor issues, which fixed themselves thru and easy in windows bios update. I built this to overclock, but as of yet I see no need. It loads fast , and rules on all the games I play. I can play BF2142 on full settings, while encoding a DVD, Im not joking! FOr anyone looking for a build of similar budget, you can surely trim or add some fat off this build, and if you have monitor and other things, thats even better. Basically I just wanted to reassure first time builders that they can build one easily and get issues resovled all within the forum as I did.

Congrats and enjoy. The best thing about building and configing it all yourself is you get it exactly how you want it. I can't wait to build my C2D system in the coming months.

nice build although I wouldn't trust the PSU with that beast. Guessing it came with the case?

You know what we're waiting for (like hungry hyenas!)... where's your pricelist and links ;)

Looks like a very nice build, but the PSU could use a bit of upgrading later on.

Hows that mobo? You said you need to update the bios? I'm trying to configure a C2D build but i'm stuck on which mobo to get. I'm not a big OCer so i'm not sure if I need that board but its around my price range. I've heard good and bad things about it so i'm trying to figure out if its worth my time to get it and risk having it not work right out of the box.

I used ANANDTECHS real time pricing to find the best deals, surpsingly I got all of the stuff From Newegg. Like I said I havent had any problems with the mobo, it came with f4 bios and acted funky but, you can update them right in windows. My mobo is a little on the budget end, but people like the DS3, and everyone likes the p5W from what I can tell. I caught a little hell for PSU, but I havent had any power issues yet.

Well you seem happy with your build and it must be satisfying that you did everything yourself. Naturally using AT for research. Nice build.
As mentioned before, your PSU is a bit suspect, but otherwise, good playing!

Congratulations on your first build. Now you can reap the rewards of your hard work and know your computer inside and out. Good luck with it.

congrats on the build. i love that "ahh" feeling once it's all together and running smoothly. best of all, you get the exact parts you want and usually far cheaper and without all the extra junk of a retail PC (like Dell). be careful though, system building can become an addicting hobby, not too dissimilar from people who love to work on their cars... before you know it, you've dumped more money on newer parts you didn't really need... but it's all fun :)

edit: btw, that's a very nice system. as others have said, the PSU could've been a bit better and i'm partial to bigger monitors, but still a very solid system. oh, and newegg usually does have the best prices, so no surprise you got all your stuff there.

I can't wait either - but those damn DDR2 prices are having me postpone my plans. Debating on whether to rebuild my LANBoy 3200+ system with spare parts once it comes out of storage and slapping a X2 4800+ on it.

Decisions... :)

For OP, great system! Echo everyone's thoughts about the PSU - those XT's are hungry beasts. But it should handle it fine until you feel the need to upgrade it.

I know what you mean about it being addicting. Now that I know how to do it, I'm already looking. I have an ATI1900XT 512mb card, but with DX10 coming soon, I'll end up with one of those and a new PSU probably too.........

Thermaltake 420w PSU with 18A on 12v rail= total crap..prehaps you should replace it before it causes a problem rather than waiting for one to happen. My died after 3 days for no apperant reason..you have a power hungry video card, being powered by a weak low end PSU, you may be ok, but I really wouldn't recomend it. Would you leave an expensive car parked in a bad neighborhood with the keys in the ignition?

I'm noticing some strong opinions about my psu. I'll make you haters a deal, if my PSU takes a poop, I'll gladly post that. If it doesnt, which I dont think on my current system it will, then....well I guess you'll never know, unless I weekly update that my psu is in fact causing me no problems................

nice work, but as others have said before me, u may need to look into a beefier PSU in the near future
