Uhhh, why are you physically going to each PC? Use VNC and store the files on a network drive, it's ridiculous to go to each PC to install standard software for multiple computers.

you don't know my boss and the people i work with...

What's to know, you say "<insert boss name here> I have a plan that will save the company (number of hours spent deploying software * hourly pay) a day" If they are paranoid about spying or something like that (some at my last job were) then you just set VNC as a service and check the box to prompt for permission when a user is logged in.

we use remote admin.
my boss says he wants to make it easier on us but yet when i use remote admin to try to help someone, he bitches at me and tells me to go to the PC. i can't win with this guy. its either his way or no way.

i was very frusterated on monday night. i was trying to get a good lead part for a song i am working on and couldn't get it.

i was getting pretty hacked off. then i called my girlfriend and felt better.

ohh the power of women.

edit: concerning the thread... i actually kind of like that tedious boring work. i don't know why. something about it is nice. it soothes me. its busy work i suppose. as busy as watching a little progress bar go across the screen. but i like it. want to trade?

I absolutely can't stand that kind of mundane boring crap. I have *got* to find something to keep my mind busy, or else I become very, very discontent. I wouldn't be able to hold your job, even if I did badly need the money.

then just suck it up and do it the hard way for a little while.

Make your boss buy you dameware and a file server. Thats one way.

Dameware can be your friend...

edit: oh.. and it sounds like you could become the boss to me...

Isn't that the nature of your job?

yes, but only to a point. i have other stuff i need to do also. my job description isn't "update monkey", but thats all i seem to be doing. I spent a whole week going around trying to install a new version of anti-virus software and some reporting software, and still don't have everyone done. i think i still have about 7 users left who need it done. i started doing this 3 weeks ago.

now yesterday he tells me there's another program i need to install. i have to physically go to everyone's computer and do all this manually. hell, i had to go and do Windows Updates myself because he didn't trust the users to do it themselves and he didn't want to run the auto-updates for some reason. i finally decided myself to just set it for auto-updates because it was ridiculous.

Uh quit then if you don't like your job.

quitting is easy. finding another job is the hard part. central PA really sucks for IT jobs. i'd even consider doing something else, but I have no experience or training in anything else.

Where you work at? Im from Central PA for the most part as well.

The big question is whether or not some other critical area is being neglected as a result of all your time spent installing things manually. Critical in the context of things the business needs, not things that you think you should be doing to make your job less mundane.

If there is, then you have a good business case for something like SMS, Zen, Citrix, Marimba, Tivoli, Altiris, etc.

If not, I'm afraid you're stuck doing what most would consider YOUR JOB! 😀

So you are basically bitching about the fact that you don't like IT work, even though that is your job.

Maybe time to change careers not just change jobs.
