Dear Pontifex,

You have wasted 5 minutes of my life. I want them back. Now. Thanks.

PS - Your job isn't that bad compared to many others out there, and I bet you get paid very well for what you do. Be thankful for what you have and look for something else "more challenging" if that's what you desire.

i didn't put a gun toyour head and force you to read it.
i know my job is not as bad as other people's jobs. i'm not talking about other jobs. i'm talking about mine.

any time i try to suggest doing something differently, my boss either acts like i'm dumb or just doesn't want to do it.

sounds like your boss is lazy

edit:

so I read most of your replies and that just sucks dude. Any decent size company should have a system of updating. I really don't see why your boss would be against it. Why would he even say that you should be kept busy updating? If they just spend the money on a efficient way of updating software, you can spend time doing other tasks that will be more beneficial to the company in the long run. If all you are doing is updating software in computers quit man. That's horrible, i'd never stay in an environment that I'm not challenged.

i'm really starting to get pissed at my job.
we have about 50 computer users. there are 2 IT guys - myself and my boss.
i'm the one who always gets stuck going around installing new stuff or copying new files.

we are going to be using this new manufacturing software and just about every time it is updated, i have to go around to everyone's computer and copy the client software to their PCs. it takes about 7-10 minutes per PC to copy from my usb flash drive. somtimes we get several updates per week. this turns out to be a several day thing to get everyone updated.

its not just that, but anything else that needs updated or installed. most of them are computer illiterate and my boss doesn't want them doing anything by themselves. so yeah, i'm screwed doign all these updates and sh!t by myself.

i'm also getting tired of going around to everyone's PC, installing whatever it is that needs installed and then coming back to my desk only to find out "oh, i forgot, you need to install this too." i then have to go back around and install something else.

plus, my boss doesn't keep me in the loop on certain things, so people are askign me questions when i have no clue, or i'll get stuck while he is out trying to work with someone on something i have no clue on. not to mention that he is extremely disorganized.

cliffs:
1 - have to update about 50 computers with various software by myself (takes days to do, depending on software)
2 - get no help from boss
3 - hate my job

Sounds like you have an easy job. Enjoy it.

Sounds like you should keep your resume in order and be on the lookout for a less frustrating job.

Meantime, some comments. I was the guy who wrote the new versions of the central custom-developed software that my company was using (for over 100 users). I didn't do the original development, but it had a neat feature where every time a user started the application from their machine, it opened a starter program and the first thing that starter program would do is check to see if there was a newer version of the main application out on the server in a designated location. If there was, it would immediately download the newer version to the local PC before launching the main application. This was a NEAT feature and saved me all that installation angst you speak of.

Another thing that I'm sure has been mentioned in this thread (haven't read beyond the OP) is the use of basic installation software that you can use to install a suite of programs in one fell swoop, basically cloning machines and saving hours of work/machine.

Edit: Meantime, two things:

1. Draw the line - don't let yourself get suckered into doing more than one person can be reasonably expected to do. In my case, 8 hours/day, and I think that's reasonable, and 5 days/week.

2. Check yourself out and make sure that even though you are technically overburdened, you don't let yourself get out of sorts, angry, upset, nervous or worse... sick! Maintain your composure. Sounds for certain like this is not a stable situation. It won't be long before you can look back and laugh at this. Good luck!

So you are basically bitching about the fact that you don't like IT work, even though that is your job.

Maybe time to change careers not just change jobs.

why did you even bother posting?

changing careers sounds like a good idea to me. now, explain to me how i can do that without going back to school? because 1) i have $17k left to pay on my last school loans and 2) fvck if i'm going to go back to school and work at the same time. i did that for too long already and it sucks.

Uh quit then if you don't like your job.

quitting is easy. finding another job is the hard part. central PA really sucks for IT jobs. i'd even consider doing something else, but I have no experience or training in anything else.

Where you work at? Im from Central PA for the most part as well.

Halifax

Your about 45mins away from me.

OK, you need to quit bitching and get creative.🙂
Start by installing ultravnc on a few of the most PITA boxes to service, the most far-flung and with the most "needy" users. You've got admin rights, just do it😉
Explain to the users that the little icon in the service tray is a new tool to help them.😀
Get your boss to suggest that you come in earlier or stay late for all this updating, so you don't interrupt work. Manipulate him into thinking it is his idea.
Start updating the boxes from the comfort of your desk, while neffing at anandtech!
