And I guess that picture answers the question of 'full-on Trumpism vs apolitical ignorance' (the first picture in the thread looked like something that might have been a cringe-humor plot-line in The Office...this one, not so much). I find it shocking for teachers to be expressing such sentiments. I suppose in Idaho they don't have many Hispanic students?

I thought I read Latino students in that school (or district) are in the mid-teens percentage. High enough IMO that it's shameful that school teachers would dress up as a border wall.

The title of the story suggests that the "Mexican stereotypes" and the border wall were at the same school but from the body of the story it looks like these were two separate faculties and the "Mexican Stereotype" outfits were largely clean and colorful.

Border wall is clearly a "bad shoot" on the part of the staff and just plain dumb thinking. Wouldn't want those folks teaching my kids when they cannot perform basic critical thinking and analysis on their own Halloween costumes.

The Mexican outfits needs some more context, these folks weren't dressing up as some of Trump's "bad hombres" or anything, or partaking in some sort of subtext by pairing up with the wall teachers.

Personally, I agree with this sentiment. I don't automatically find that dressing up as Mexicans should be a cultural faux pas. Although I agree with those who've posted that it's still a professional environment so teachers should err on the side of caution, it is Halloween and I wouldn't judge "casual racism" without knowing more. As a progressive who is absolutely disgusted by the modern Republican party, charges of cultural appropriation can and do run amok IMHO. I.e. dressing up as a ninja if you aren't Japanese has been criticized, or the high school girl who decided to wear a Chinese evening dress to prom. As an Asian American, am I really supposed to be offended by these last two examples?

You need a better language translator. The issue is more complicated than its simplistic algorithm as it renders your point to nonsense, or is it the translator?

Wearing costumes in itself isn't the issue IMO. I'm sure I could get a sombrero and wear it on Cinco de Mayo and few would think anything of it. If I were to grab a sign that says "build the wall" or similar, it completely eliminates any festive motivation to a rational viewer.

The costumes were part of an after class team building exercise. Appears no students were present however the school is being elusive about saying that.
The pictures were posted to a school Facebook page.
Article refers to them as staff members not sure if any or all are actually teachers.

My opinion has not changed dumb costumes to wear to work. See cnn & Hannity approved flow chart from previous post.

If the two pictures are from entirely different schools, then I think the first one remains ambiguous. But the very fact that it looks really bad in conjunction with the second one (which is downright inappropriate and offensive, as well as being hilariously un-self-aware with that Statue of Liberty reference) is surely a good illustration of why dressing up like that is just not a good idea. Even if you do it for apolitical 'humor' rather than a deliberate disrespect, consider the company you now find yourself in.

Maybe, also, one should keep distinct arguments about "cultural appropriation" and _mockery_? Those are different things and parody national-costumes are more the latter, surely? And thus could be said to belong to the wider category of 'blackface'.

And also I think that is dependent on the relationship between those who could be seen as engaging in 'mockery' and those potentially being mocked. It's not the same if the former don't have any power over the latter or any real history of interaction with them. Same reason why I don't think it would become an issue if I did a comedy American accent but could find myself in difficulties if I did a comedy Indian or Irish one.

No, I think school teachers/staff dressing up as Trump's wall or a group of Mexican immigrants, while a very real situation is ongoing, is in very poor taste and at least mildly racist. I never said they should lose their jobs, but they needed to understand that those costumes would be seen as offensive in a public school environment. How dense can educators be to not understand the current PC school culture they work within?

That said, those excusing this kind of bad behavior as just a bunch of over-sensitive folks not being able to take a joke are the real problem. It's the same lame excuse made forever by racists and misogynists who've enjoyed abusing others for their own pleasure. I think it's pretty sad if you need to make others feel bad to have you fun.

I enjoy stand-up comedy quite a bit, especially the edgy and offensive stuff that often targets race or gender. Public school teachers should still refrain from racially insensitive fun at work as it's not the place for it.
